Hey, i was wondering whats the fastest cpu available for a personal computer? both AMD's fastest & Intel's fastest. also - why dont they make them faster? and if anyone knows - how can they make them faster? not like, you take the pin a a1b4 and move it 0.12Ω closer to pin a2b4 or anything, but just like better cooling, dif. materials, ...
thanks :) ::tim

Within the PC realm, the answer would be Athlon 64 FX-55, but companies like Intel and AMD are in business primarily for one thing; money.

To make lots of money, you have to sell in high numbers, in other words the product has to be affordable. I'd love to be able to completely install XP in 90seconds too, but if there a CPU that will do that right now, it'd cost way too much.

Faster doesn't always mean better. I mean you look at the G5 processors for example The G5 processor outpreforms any Top of the line AMD Athlon 64's and Intel Pentium 4 processors out on the market at a much lower clock speed then the top of the line AMD's and Intel processors. The more cpu's evole the less mhz they need for preformance. Plus the heat will be less which is good because the less energy your system will have to use up to cool down the processor.

I can't wait until the day a processor only runs at 500mhz and does the same job as a 4ghz processor and maybe that day isn't that too far off because Sun is producing a server processor that is state of the art that will only run at 1.1ghz in 2006.

Yes, higher speed is not always the way to go. There are DSP chips that do a lot more work than the generic PC CPUs but run at a fraction of the current GHz clock speed.

Take the example of the AMD vs Intel chips. The Athlons run much slower than the intel chips but perform more or less equal to the intel equivalents.

secondly there are other bottle necks to speed like hard disk access time, ram, v card etc. The CPU at the moment runs much faster than other devices and hence is not a bottle neck in most cases. I'd love to see faster rams and hard disks than sheer clock speed.

LOL can you imagine having a 133mhz processor that would equal a 4ghz Pentium 4 but at the same time your ram and hard drive and all other devices would be able to hang with it at the same time due to the low clock speed on the processor. You would probably have the quickest pc on the planet, because their would be no wait time for anything because everything would be running nysc with one another.

Once cell technology becomes mainstream and affordable to the public I wouldn't be shocked if a processor could reach that low of mhz and at the same time out preform a 4ghz processor.

I think we are seeing processors starting to make steps towards doing that now, From what I read there are no plans for Intel to reach clocks speeds past 4ghz for a while and the reason for that is heat of course, but also new technology like dual core that is coming out where processors don't need more mhz to run better. AMD clocks speeds once dual core comes out are going to pretty much be haulted for a while like Intel's because of the same reasons I just mentioned.

Faster ram would be nice. A low mhz powerful processor and a fast ram would be a dream come true for overclcokers and gamers!

I belive the G5's run fast because they are mainly an "FSB" chip

FSB=800mhz
multi=2

=1.6ghz

and then there's the dual G5's.

Indigan,

If G5's run so fast beacuase of the FSB then how come they are still faster than the 800mhz P4's and the 1000mhz hypertransport A64's ?

Just curious lol

yes, i know most of the above information (besides the whole sun cpu and w/e). but MY PROBLEM is that i'm doing this for a paper and i was seeing what people had to say about the max speeds a personal computer could reach. lol its for my math class.. and so i dont really care about who can do what better this time. i'm not buying a cpu, i'm not looking to buy a cpu.. i'm just seeing what people have to say about the fastest they can go :) and any information on the "speed" topic would be greatly appreciated. lol
