I just built my new rig on friday. It is a P4 1.6a with stock heatsink and one extra fan on the case. I am using the MSI 645 Ultra board with 512 mb Corsair pc2700 ram. I am currently running my FSB at 138 which gives me a CPU speed of 2.21 Ghz. I haven't raised the CPU voltage. The 333 Mhz memmory is running at 344 Mhz. So far I have been 100% stable and my CPU temp was at 52 deg. C. after 3 hours of playing Morrowind. I don't think I am going to push my luck and go any higher. The stable motherboad and top of the line ram are most likely helping me out a lot. Could some one else let me know how high they have gone with this chip? Is safe to run at that temperature?

There are two ways to overclock your Cpu, either turning up the voltage going to the cpu or or increasing the speed of the front side bus. Both of these are done through the bios. I stuck with increasing the speed of the FSB. In the bios there is a section for adjusting the frequency and voltage. Your bios is probably different then mine but you should see a setting there that says fsb=100Mhz. this is the bus speed going to your cpu. The cpu multiplies this by 16 to get your 1.6Ghz. So by increasing this value your cpu is running faster. In my case fsb = 138Mhz X 16 = 2.1 Ghz. The fsb is also used to determine the speed that your memmory, AGP, and PCI slots run at. There should be settings there that let you change the fractions. If you are using 333mhz memmory then you want to keep that setting near 333. I would suggest starting at Fsb = 15 and see if everything is stable. Hopefully there is an easy way for you to tell what temperature your Cpu is running at. I can check mine through my bios or a pc alert program that came with my motherboard. The cpu temp shouldn't be more than 50C. I leave my case open, that really helps. How high you can go depends on heat and the quality of your memmory and motherboard. My memmory seems to be running fine at 344 mhz.

i have a p4 1.6a running on a asus p43533 motehr board with samsund 512mb pc 2700. i have my fsb over clocked to 157 mhz giving me cpu clock of 2.51 ghz...i increased the core voltage to 1.6 volts and the voltage to the meory to 2.7 volts and its completely stable...my cpu temp stays at 40 degrees celcius and i'm still using the stock heatsink and fan that came with the cpu...all i have to say is the p4 1.6 a is an over clocking monster
