hi

i am going to be building myself a system, and i'd like to know which of these components are the best

on this system, i'm going to be surfing the net, programming (java, vb, etc), and playing some small games.

i plan on running windows vista when it comes out, so i want something pretty quick (i hear it is a very demanding OS).

i can spend under $1000 (tax included).

i was looking at these:
intel p4 506 2.66ghz lga775 (btw, does this one have em64t and HT?)
asrock 775vm8 mainboard
2gb kingston ddr pc3200 ram (for vista)
40gb WD 8mb cache hard drive (i barely need a big hard drive)
CDRW/DVD drive
some 128mb video card (again, for vista)

any comments or opinions are welcome, but i don't want to start a flame war.

one more thing: i don know that vista will be released in a 32bit and a 64bit version. honestly, i don't think i'll ever need the ability to address 17,592,186,044,416MB of ram compared to 4,096MB of ram because i'm not doing too many things on the computer, imho.

thx!

Toshiba M50-MX2:
Celeron M 1.5GHZ 1MB L2
512 DDR2 PC4200 RAM
60GB 5400RPM HDD
DVD+/-RW CDRW DVD-RAM

You looking for a budget system? Because what you mentioned is just that. No the Pentium 4 506 does not support H/T. If you want H/T you are going to have to get the Pentium 4, 2.8ghz 521 series or higher.

Why not get an

S939 Athlon 64 3200+.

S939 Nforce 4 ultra motherboard.

2 gigs of DDR 3200 Memory.

160 gig SATA II hard drive.

ATI X1300 PCIe 16x graphics card.

Antec ATX 2.0 450watt power supply.

ATX case with no power supply under 40 bucks.

All this should cost you total plus shipping under 650 bucks at newegg.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 6800GT
SATA II 250gig 7200rpm 8mb cache
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI
