Comment:

I recently Purchased a Sony Vaio FS790 Notebook. It has the Intel Pentium M (1.83GHZ) with the Sonoma Core. My problem is that the processor seems to be getting way to hot. At idle at 6X Multiplier (800MHZ) it idles at about 45c and reaches about 55c under full load. But, when I put it on X14 Multiplier (1.83GHZ) it idles at 64c and reaches 80c with ease. The thing is it never shuts down (Even when it hit 95c when playing Battlefield 2). The only thing that caused the game to exit was the warning message by Notebook Hardware Control telling me that 95c had been exceeded. The Video Card hits around 92c under full strain when playing games. I have opened up the Laptop and inspected for dust but, it is extremely clean and I never have the vents on the laptop covered. Even when I have it on my laptop cooler it reaches 80c at full load at 1.83GHZ. I hear the fan come on all the time but, it doesn't seem to make the differance in the tempurature. I am wondering if there is any cause for concern for the type of Processor running at these tempuratures?

What is the room temperature you were playing games in? If the room temperature is >25C, then expect the temperature to be higher... As for laptop CPU series, they usually have max temp of 100C before it shuts down, and if the system is stable under those temperatures, then there is nothing to worry about. Once the laptop reach above certain temperature, say 100C, it will either throttle (slow down) or shut down immediately. What I would do is play those games in a cooler room <25C...

I know this may sound odd but it may work if you are playing games and I know this sound like an oxymoron especially for this reason, but you could always try to underclock it using clockgen. Now you may lose a tad bit preformance but nothing that you will really see if it's dropped by 100mhz. That may keep your laptop cpu from overheating and running cooler.

hi
my Vaio 2.8ghz prescottr only runs at 85 celcius max and its precott but ur Pentium M should run cool as its Mobile check the cpu cooler os mounter correctly if you can get to it and that it is kept under warranty by doing so
also consider buying notebook cooler or if your serious think about mod cooling your pc e.g. water cooling note book wouldne be mobile but cooler lol :)
