Hello,

I recently picked up a laptop from a buddy of mine and there are a couple problems with it that I would like to address...

well, first off, the battery doesn't charge so I can only run it from the AC, not really a problem, I can always get a new one.

The DVD-Rom doesn't read but again not a problem at the moment.

The big problem I am having is overheating, when i'm just surfing the net or using it for word processing it runs at about 33C witch I don't have a problem with but when i'm in a game it hits anywhere between 50C - 70C which i'm guessing isn't all that great. I don't know all that much about laptops so i'm not sure what they typically run at.

Oh, and for refrence the specs of the laptop are:

Intel P4 2.66GHz
512MB DDR RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000

I'm not sure what else it has cause I haven't really had a chance to look at it all yet but when I do i'll be sure to post.

Has that laptop ever been cleaned out? Meaning, flipping it over remvoing all the panels and blow the dust off its hardware.

Also you may need to take the heatsink off the processor and clean off the old thermal paste and apply new thermal paste. A grain size worth of thermal paste on the processor is all you need. You can pick some artic silver thermal paste up just about anywhere they sell computers for under 8 bucks.

By doing those two methods it will drop your temp anywhere from 5c to 10c or more.

As for the DVD not reading have you tired to clean the dust off the eye using a disc cleaner?

Hey,

I did take it apart and clean it and when I took the heatsink off the CPU I noticed that there wasn't any thermal paste on the CPU at all, as if someone thought it was dirty and cleaned it off, so I will get some asap. As for the DVD, i'm pretty sure its shot.

Thanks for the help.

So I went down to Sneakers Computers today and got some Thermal Paste, put it on the CPU and now:

When Idle: Around 24C
When Using Internet or Word: Around 30C - 33C
When Gaming: Anywhere from 40C - 60C but normally stays around 54C which is still alot better then it was before.

I'm going to look into getting one of those platforms that goes underneath your laptop with fans built it.

So... After using this for the day with the thermal paste on n everything, at first it made a big difference but now it doesn't seem so much. its back to running at 37C to 43C just on the net and running normal windows programs.

Any other reasons why this could be? i've cleaned it right up, both hardware cleaning and cleaning up the HDD in windows.

You're fine for that type of processor. If it's staying under 45c while doing normal things, you're ok.

Those types of processors aren't going to be as cool as a desktop processor, because it's ran in a much less air friendly enviroment due to all the hardware parts being close together. If you got it 5c less then it was under any condition that makes a diff especially in a laptop. As long as it's below 70c you should be fine.

On a side note, if you ever wanted to upgrade the laptops ram and processor later on this is a good place to get older pc parts considering older parts get harder and harder to find.

Like this Pentuim 4 3.06ghz processor for 50 bucks.

And this 512mb pc 2100 DDR SODIMM for 20 bucks.

Thank you very much for all your help, i'll look into those sites for sure. I kinda thought it would run hotter then a desktop computer but I wasn't totally sure. I'll pick up one of those fan platforms as well and I should be fine after that.

Yeah getting one of those under vent platforms wouldn't hurt either.

You are welcome.
