Hi,

Could do with some help with a problem I am having with my laptop (Toshiba Satellite, Intel P4 2.566, about 6 months old). Today, for the first time it just stopped. Dead. I.e. total shutdown without warning.

Had a funny suspicion that it was a temp thing so let it sit there for a bit then re-booted and it all went fine.

Then, later on, playing Counter Strike, and boom - same thing happened.

So, I install HMonitor to check out the temperature and it's running at 55-60 deg C doing nothing. Installed CPU Burn-in and it hits a constant 80 deg C (peaking at 83).

My questions to you guys (I had to get there eventually) are:
- presumably that's high, even including tolerances.
- are laptops built to run at higher temps?
- could a high temperature cause the kind of immediate catastrophic failure I experienced?
- could my CPU already have had it's life reduced by this problem - i.e. should I get them to replace the CPU under warranty?

I appreciate any replies.

Thanks.

Laptops run very hot, more than desktop. You have the P4 desktop processor in a laptop. Intel P4 M series processors are designed for laptop with both thermal and battery life selection. The thermal sensor cuts the speed almost to half when overheated, and it also reduces vcore to further reduces heat.

What kind of surface you rest you laptop on when it shut down?

Laptop should be operated on hard flat surface like formica, wood etc. Running you laptop on telephone book for example would prevent heat dissipation from the heatsink which requires heatpipe to get the heat from CPU. The soft surface limited the space at the bottom of the laptop hence reduces the thermal transfer.

Try leaving your laptop running over the blancket in bed, it warms up your blanket quickly.

One way to keep your laptop running in gaming is to have more air space in between the table and the bottom of the laptop. I normally use a "trianglar" ruler placing it at the rear of the laptop to rest on.

Thanks for those comments. Didn't realise laptops ran hotter than desktops.

My laptop is sitting on wood, but I notice that the fans are located at the bottom of the laptop which doesn't seem incredibly sensible.

I'll try raising the laptop up and see if it improves things.

Thanks again.

I am using the same laptop with you i guess. Satellite 5200-902
Ý am using speedfan 4.09 for measuring the temperatures. If i stop the fan speed to %0 the cpu climbs to a temperature 58 degrees. After it reaches 58 degrees laptop automatically launches fan until it gets 50 degrees and then stops again til it reaches 58. It is changing between 50 and 58.

But If i use the fan speed at %100 it just stops 46 degrees without any changing.
