Comment:

I just installed a new cpu into my KT3 Ultra Aru Motherboard lastweek, and have had some problems with it, that nothing I have tried has helped.

Here's my problem...

I installed a 2600+ 333fsb CPU, went into BIOS, disabled spread spectrum, increased FSB to 166, and saved my changes, and rebooted... as soon as I booted up... the computer restarted itself. I went back into bios, loaded defaults, and booted again... same problem... restarts itself within 3 minutes of booting up.
but... as soon as I took off the side panel, and left it off... the computer stays on, and running... (slightly hotter than i prefer, but... I am using the retail heatsink the cpu came with for now... i ruined my swiftech copper hs )
Here are a few of the things I Have tried.

downgrading bios... from 5.7 to 5.6
clearing cmos
loading bios defaults
removing copper shim from cpu (and reapplying artic silver 3 and hsf)
I have bypassed my external energizer psu/surge protector
I have set my vcore to 1.675
removed one stick of memory at a time...
basically, I have done everything I can think of, and now... I'm begggggging for one of you guys to help me out

my system specs are as follows.
(btw.. everything was Great, and running smoothly, with side panel ON... until i upgraded the cpu)
kt3 ultra aru - ver 1.0
xp 2600+ 333fsb
512mb ddr2700
msi ti4200 vtp8x video card
2 x 120gb wd hdd's
dvd-rom
msi cdrw
pink lian-li pc60usb case.

if i need to give anymore info, let me know... I'll be checking back

thanks in advance,
vanilla

Since you say it runs fine with the side panel off, I'm thinking that heat is the issue. What kind of temp readings are you getting in the BIOS?
Do you have adequate case cooling? Ideally, you should have a few fans blowing cool air in the front, and warm air out the back or out the top. Are your cables tucked away neatly or are you using rounded cables?
You stated that you are using the retail HSF... I'm assuming that you cleaned off the thermal tape before applying the Artic Silver. (Sorry... I have to ask that!)
I would recommend that you use the shim... my experience is that it actually helps cooling, possibly as much as a degree or two, as well as keeping the core intact. Also, you just want to use a very thin layer of Artic Silver.

Thats about all I can think of... also check your system temps in your BIOS if your mobo supports it. It could be excessive heating on the northbridge, but thats pretty unlikely.

you need to watch your cpu temp and see if a certain temp correlates to the restarts.

Your board is Max out @ 2600+ 266 mhz bus. You can't run @ 333mhz unless you have the KT3 Ultra 2. Check the MSI webpage for support CPU's and you'll see your top is 2600+ @ 266 for MSI KT3 ULTRA Rev 1.0 ( 6380 E ).
