K6-2 Ruined??

I just installed a K6-2 333. A few times I booted the system before installing a fan/heat sink, and the processor quit after 30 sec - 1 min. Now I'm experiencing some strange graphics problems, occasionally, like the screen suddenly reverting to a bunch of pulsating colored squares. Whenever Win 98 (4.10.1998) boots up, there is a flash for a second of the screen as it looked last time Windows shut down. My video card is Adrenaline Rush 3D. Wondering if the processor could be damaged, or what the deal is?

OMG! You messed up when you "booted the system before installing a fan/heat sink." Some parts of that processor could be fried but somehow still operational. I personally would never run a computer without some sort of cooling device on the CPU.

Your Momma is correct: by not installing heatsink/fan on cpu, you damaged it. Fortunately, those cpus are reasonably cheap on ebay.

If you are replacing it, you might as well get a K6-3, they perform so much better than a K6-2. Just about the only place I've seen them is ebay. Make sure your mobo is compatible too. And make sure you have a heatsink on this time.

Speaking of which... Does a 400MHz K6-3 really outperform a 550MHz K6-2? I've heard this several times before. And would a K6-3 really work without problems in a K6-2 comp? I want to see if I can soup up my old comp before I donate it to my sister.

Froggx - is right on, go for the K6-3, K6-2's aren't very good chips at all. and to answer StarWreck's question YES, bigtime !
