Subject: Is my new CPU damaged?OS: 2000CPU/Ram: 900 duron for now |
Comment: Hello, I replaced my 900mhz Duron with a 1.1ghz Thunderbird, and I used the same CPU with the new CPU that was on the Duron, and the CPU temp was about 61C. So I tried adding extra fans, but then I when I put the Pc back together and tried to boot up, it crashes on the BIOS screen. So I then decided to take out the thunderbird to prevent further damaga, and my Duron works fine. I put the thunderbird back int eh box and Ill install it again when I get my new fan in the mail. Is the Thunderbird broke or do you think it was just too hot and it will work again once I get the new fan? Thanks and check out my link under my name :)

Reply: (edit)If your bios screen shut down, then you probably have the SHUTDOWN temp set to 60 degrees. No your cpu should be fine. Athlons can go just above 90 degrees c before burning out. And your Duron fan should have been enough. So that part I don't understand. One thing though. Do you have a 300 watt psu? You should have a 300 for an Athlon Tbird. Also, did you clean the heatsink off completely, and add thermal paste before putting it on the new cpu? You should have no problems with the Tbird.

Reply: (edit)Hi XxxFrancisxxxUSA, Thanks for the reply. I didn't understand what you meant about the 60C shutdown. Yeah I put my 900mhz Duron back in, now it runs at 50C which before it ran at 46C. But using the same Fan with the Athlon it runs at 60C. So your saying my CPU is ok? It kept freezing on the BIOS boot up, after it checked the RAM memory it freezed there. But this happened when I tried to take the fan of fto reapply the grease, then when I put the fan back on and booted up my PC it kept freezing. My PSU, ok when I bought it on the internet it said 300PSU, but when I look inside the case the PSU says "400MAX watts" So I dont know BTW I am using speedfan to monitor my temperature Any additional info you can give me would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Put your old CPU in & access the BIOS. Look for a setting that say something like "CPU over temp protection", or along that jist. It is a facility to cut power to the CPU if it goes over that setting. Increase it to 70 or 75, save & exit. Then install your new CPU.

Reply: (edit)Ok I put the 900mhz CPU back in and not it's at 56C Why is my CPU temp so high now?? I am applying the grease correctly, it has ventalation, I even tried installing extra fans and the temp isn't changed. The strange thing is that my Athlon CPU was working fine all day until I tried to take the fan off and re-apply the grease. BTW I checked my BIOS and I do not belive I have that option you were talking about changing the shutdown temp.

Reply: (edit)Are you absolutely sure you're putting the grease on right? Did you wipe both surfaces off first very clean? You have to get all the grease off every time you change it and reapply new grease. Make sure you do that. That might be why your temps keep rising and if not then something is wrong.
