CPU/Ram: AMD 6400

Hello, this is the first time something didn't work from Newegg so I want to make sure that I didn't do anything wrong or if the CPU is just dead on arrival. Here are my current specs:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

This setup works perfectly. However I wanted to upgrade my CPU and just received the AMD 6400+ 3.2ghz CPU. When I installed it and booted up my PC, the screen was blank and the HDD light was on. I made sure that all of my conections were secure and tried again but same problem. I then removed the CPU and popped my old one back in and everything booted up just fine.

I had burned out CPUS before and usually the PC wouldn't boot up at all or there were errors, beeps, etc. but none of that occured. Does my motherboard support this CPU or what else can I do? Thanks.

CPUs are rarely DOA. It's possible that the power supply isn't supplying enough current on the first +12v rail to the CPU. When it comes to power consumption, the X2 6400+ is right up there with Intel's Preshot. At 125w, it requires a great deal more from the PSU than the 5400+.

The 6400+ isn't much of an upgrade from the 5400+. Why don't you overclock the 5400+? I'm certain that with your awesome motherboard, you'd be able to take your 5400+ to at least 3GHz.

Replacing Super P3:
Pentium M Dothan @ 2.82GHz (166x17)
3GB PC2-6400 @ 667MHz
9600GT
Blu-Ray
Modified PowerMac G4 Quicksilver case
Homebuilt 1920x1200 projector
Vista x86

I don't know how to overclock it though :( I just tried using the bios tool AI overclock and set it to 10% but the AMD power monitor software still shows 2.8ghz speed. I have the votage set at only 1.30 though.

I agree with jackbomb. The 6400+ is a power hog, plus you paid $140 for meager 400MHZ increase in clock speed? It was a complete waste of money.

"I don't know how to overclock it though"

To start with, do NOT overclock with AI tool. Disable it & overclock manually. Here's some recommended settings:

Under Advanced/Jumperfree:

AI Tuning = manual
CPU Frequency = 250
DDR2 voltage = AUTO
CPU voltage = AUTO
CPU multiplier = 12x

Under Advanced/CPU Configuration:

AMD Cool n Quiet = disabled
AMD Live = disabled

DRAM Configuration:

Memory Clock Frequency = DDR2-667
DRAM ECC enable = disabled
- leave all the rest of the DRAM settings on AUTO (for now).

Under Advanced/Chipset:

CPU<->MCP55 HT speed = 4x
CPU<->MCP55 HT width = 16 16

The above settings will put the CPU at 3.0GHz, RAM at 400MHz (DDR2-800), HT at 1000MHz.

If you wanna take it higher, simply increase the CPU multi from 12x to 12.5x...that will put the CPU at 3.125GHz, RAM at 416MHz (DDR832). If you increase the CPU multi to 13x, the CPU will run at 3.25GHz, RAM at 406MHz (DDR812).

You *may* have to increase the CPU voltage to stabilize the overclock but you won't know until you try it at stock voltage.

Thanks a lot for your helpful comments jam you must get paid to post helpful answers since you have been doing it for years :) I have followed all of your instructions (except I couldn't find the ecc disabled one). In BIOS it says the CPU freq is 3000MHZ, but using the AMD Power Monitor it says that CPU is reduced to 2400MHZ Frequency

Why are you using AMD power monitor? It's not meant to give you the overclock settings. Uninstall it & use CPUZ instead.

Download CPU-Z 1.47, unzip, open the folder, then right click on CPUZ.exe & select "create shortcut". Drag the shortcut to the desktop then use it to check your CPU & RAM settings.

You could also give OCCT 2.0.0a a try.
