P4 Celeron or Pure P4 [ Reply to this message ] Hey, My friend is a hardcore gamer and he is already collected his parts to build a new machine. He only wants to find a new CHIP which is not expensive since he is all out of money. The other day we were at the computer store and looking at some Pure Pentium 4 and P4 Celerons. Believe it or not in price there was not a huge difference in P4 celeron and Pure P4. I asked the guy at the store which one would you recommend and he told us P4 Celerons because they are fastest that Pure P4 but they are not as stable as Pure P4 and they are good candidates for Overclocking as well and my friend also wants to do that. All the P4 celerons that we saw were compatible with Socket 478 Motherboard which my friend have bought 2 weeks ago. AND REMAINED the celerons crashing part,,,,I have to be honest I still have my Intel Celeron 600Mhz machine and I have to say that my machine hardly crashed and not because of the CPU or anything but because of some applications. SO MY QUESTION IS DO YOU THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GO WITH P4 CELERON THEN WITH PURE P4 (I am not yelling). My friend is more looking into speed and overclocking. If you overclock a P4 Celeron will it able to beat a Pure P4. Thanks. The p4 has more cache than the celeron. Even though i dont like the p4 I have to say that was the dumbest recommendation made a salesman.

If you're on a budget, then forget any Intel product. Go to AMD. They are cheaper and outpreform most p4. 1.53ghz AMD~= Intel p4 1.8ghz

get a PENTIUMONEY 3.06GHZ Processor only 700, LOL

Celerons aren't built for hardcore gaming. Go P4 2.A GHZ.

Your salesman was working off old information. Celerons used to be excellent OC CPUs because they ran at lower FSB speeds than their sister Pentiums and had the same core, (so it was safe to push the CPU to the faster FSB without too much concern.) P4 Celerons have 400mhz FSB speeds the same as some P4s making them less able to be overclocked, and are crippled instead by the reduced L2 cache, making them slower at certain cache intensive type applications. Unless your friend can go with a much higher speed Celeron say 2.0Ghz or higher, which may offset the cache difference, as opposed to say a 1.5Ghz P4, he probably should get the P4. I don't find Celerons unstable at all. They are a Pentium class CPU just slowed in one way or another.
