Subject: Installing new video card
Comment:

I'm installing a GeForce2 MX200 PCI on my Compaq Presario 5340, which has an onboard video. SiS530, I think.

Problem: When I plug in the PCI card and turn on the computer, nothing shows up on the monitor.

Solution?: People have said that I must disable the onboard video first. Either through the BIOS, setting jumpers, or Device Manager.

First, the Compaq BIOS doesn't have the option to turn off onboard video. Here are my BIOS settings (the ones I think may be relevant):
PCI Devices:
SIS USB Controller - IRQ 11
Video Device - IRQ 10
Other Multimedia Device - IRQ 10
Ethernet Controller - IRQ 3
Audio Device - IRQ 5
SIS VGA Controller - Disabled
Bus Options:
PCI Bus Mastering - Enabled
PCI Palette Snooping - Disabled
Onboard Monochrome Video Mode Support -Disabled
Video Memory Size - 4 MB

I have tried setting the SIS VGA Controller setting to "Enabled" but the BIOS will not save and exit, if I do that. Instead the computer just freezes.

Second, someone else said there are no jumpers for onboard video in the 5340. I looked up the jumpers and there are things called BF, JP5, and W179H. Here is the spec sheet:
http://www.compaq.com/athome/support/msgs/5300/ty10jmpr.html
(What do those names mean, by the way?)

And finally, I don't know how to to disable it in the Device Manager. I have tried removing the SiS 530 driver altoghether. But that doesn't work. It just makes Windows start up in lower resolution and fewer colors.

Anyone know how to disable onboard video? Or, if this is not the problem, anyone know how I can install this new video card?

I have tried different PCI slots, but that doesn't make a difference. I have tried installing the drivers first, but they won't install unless the computer can detect the card plugged in. But with the card plugged in, nothing shows up on the monitor.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I can't answer your questions about the board, there's a reason why I never buy namebrand computers. *BUT* I'm assuming you want to use this card for games? If you have it in the slot, windows should still detect it (go to device manager and look for the yellow exclamation mark if it doesn't and add drivers there) and install the drivers. Most games will give you a choice of 3D Renderer's, you can try choosing your new card and set it to use it (IE. EA Sports games you can do this in "3D setup" before you load the game) and then I beleive you'll have to swap the monitor cable into the PCI vid card. I remember doing something like this with an old Voodoo3 I was given on my ancient celeron333a system that had onboard SiS video but no option to disable it... but that was so long ago...

Thanks for your input John.

But what should I do if I can't see anything on the monitor when the card is plugged in. That is, as long as the card is in the slot, no signal is sent to the monitor.

Thanks.

ok,
I did exactly the same thing with almost exactly the same system, Tiffany. Mine WAS onboard graphics as well. Here's the steps I took:
1)Shut down comp. Add new pci 3d card
-->plug monitor into new pci 3d card
2)Boot up comp, windows will detect new vid card, and request drivers and such which you will provide, right? -if not, then go with nothing until you can get the latest from the 3d cards' website.
3)go to control panel, System, Device Manager & remove the onboard/unwanted graphics adapter. That will cause it to redetect it next reboot, but simply don't install any drivers for it. This will cause an exclamation mark way back in your device manager, but if you don't know how to actually disable it in you CMOS thinger, then this is the one thing you will have to put up with. It doesn't affect anything either simply having a little exclamation mark. Your games and apps will run fine with your "new"(pci, how new can it be?:) card.
I hope this has been of some use,
- J

R U ALL STUPID Tiffany said she plugged the card in and got nothing on the monitor WHEN ITS PLUGGED IN NEW CARD either that or shes completely well....dumb and has it plugged into the old one.

PLUG THE NEW CARD IN THE PCI PORT

PLUG THE MONITOR CABLE INTO THE PORT

switch on computer if it comes up blank you either need BIOS UPGRADE or its a faulty card.

BIOS UPGRADE will prob fix it as it fixed my PCI video card when i got a new mobo but i had to search for the upgrade for a while (whilst stuck with an 512Kb ISA card) LOL

Listen I am having the same problem as this tiffany girl. You cannot get into windows you dumbasses. When you plug in the PCI card. You get absolutely no video from either jack. There is no feature in the bios to disable onboard, and the motherboard has no jumpers to fix this. I have tried updating the bios but that hasn't helped either. Any ideas?
