Hello. For some reason my BIOS temperature for the CPU is different than the temperature that various monitoring programs are reporting. The BIOS reports about 52C idle. However, monitor programs show about 40C. I've used Motherboard Monitor, Hardware Sensors Monitor, Sisoft Sandra, and a couple others and they all report about the same temperature of 40C idle.

I have a feeling that the monitoring programs are correct and the BIOS is wrong because I have a Athlon XP 2600+ Barton (no OC) and the OCZ Gladiator 3 heatsink\fan. The Gladiator fan, in several reviews, has ran around the temperature that my monitoring programs are report. I know that mine won't be exactly the same, but I doubt it would be around 52C idle (58C load).

Also, I've updated my BIOS to the latest version. I have a Gigabyte 7VT600-L motherboard. Is it possible that the BIOS is the one that's lying to me? Or do you think it would be the monitoring programs?

Any help is highly appreciated. :)

Temp discrepancy is not uncommon, sometimes it might be a issue with a BIOS and usually updating the BIOS corrects that. A lot of times however the difference in the temp reading is caused by the temp being read from two spots.

More than likely your BIOS reading is from the CPU die thermal diode, while the other readings are from the socket-thermistor on the board which explains why it is lower than the CPU's actual core temp.

If I have to guess I will say the BIOS reading is the correct one.

as Sabertooth said, "Temp discrepancy is not uncommon", Temp discrepancy is common i would say (sounds easier lol.
what i trust most about CPU temp is one of those thermometers that you can measure temps of chipset physically. but i dont say that this is the best.
what i would suggest is to see the movement of tempreture rather than the actual tempreture. so you know something is wrong with your computer when your CPU's tempreture is 20C higher than usual when its working just high.

As Sabertooth suggested, updating your BIOS "should" correct any error. But 52C is not an uncommon idle temp either (LOL), so it's possible that the BIOS is correct.
