Ok, My CPU Cooler/fan went a couple weeks ago. I went to the store to buy one, I bought one, (with the heatsink attached to it) I installed it. And When I turned the computer on for the first time. it wouldnt load windows, it wouldnt boot. the fans start up, the CD player light comes on, but nothing else works. Can anyone tell me whats wrong.
Not sure if this matters but, when i took the heat sink off for the first time, i tuned the comp on, without the fan or anything on, I was stupid and touched the Processor with my knuckle, and I burned it, its still healing. it was only on for 5 seconds, I was surprised it go that hot, but i learned my lesson. So that's where I am at. (if you need to know anymore info, let me know)
Thank you to anyone who read this. And i'm open to suggestions. Im hoping I wont have to, but If I need to, i'll buy another processor.
I heard this was a great site to post computer questions.

Did you actually plug in the 3-pin or 4-pin(for LGA775) fan connector into the motherboard where it saids "CPU_FAN"? It could be a problem where you had a special option call "FAN CHECK AT STARTUP = ENABLED" and causing the system won't boot during power on... Hopefully your CPU had a thermal protection within where if the heatsink is remove, the system will shut down or throttle, otherwise, say good bye to your CPU and motherboard....

If you have an Athlon64, it *may* still be good. If it's the plain Athlon or AthlonXP, you can kiss it goodbye.

Actually I just checked, I have an AMD Duron Processor. Im sorry I dont know why I said Athalon. with and ASUS A7VC Motherboard (sorry for the inconvience) Bare with me, I dontk now much about computer terms. (im learning, maybe this was a bad idea, but i wasnt going to spend 30 bucks to have some guy install a 9 dollar thing, in less then 5 minutes)

Seeems like you fried the CPU, also the CPU is sensitive to static electricity so you need to be earthed when handling, so it lookks like you will have to spend more than you wanted to save....

AMD chips do not have thermal protection like Intel's.
You probably fried it if you burnt yourself on it.

Doesn't much matter of it's a Duron or an Athlon...like Zenith said, it's not thermally protected. If you powered it up without a heatsink installed, there's a 99% chance that you fried it.

So, if i did fry it, I would have to buy another one, and that should fix it? buy the same type? or should i buy another one? Well I learned my lesson. Do you think that would solve my problem? just buyig a new processor? is there a way to buy an intel chip, with the same pin settings what would fit into my comp? ater i buy ne and install it. theres nothing else i need to do? it should work?
thank you to everyone that applied to this.

also if nothing else works, could I install my hard drive into another computer to see whats on it? or because of what I did, did that mess up everything on my hard drive? (im worried everything got erased, and i wont be able to get to it again)

AMD Duron's are obsolete, try EBAY for used ?
You can put you hard drive into another PC as a slave drive and providing the O/S is XP or W2K it will read the drive providing the BIOS find it on boot!

"i wasnt going to spend 30 bucks to have some guy install a 9 dollar thing, in less then 5 minutes"
In hindsight, it would have been money well spent!
"ASUS A7VC Motherboard"
Is that a typo? I know there's an A7V or A7V133-C, but I don't think there's an A7VC. If it's an A7V133-C, it was a decent board in it's day (I had one). It's *probably* still good & I doubt anything happened to the data on your HDD. If you're gonna take a chance & replace the CPU, you'd be better off with an Athlon rather than another Duron. If you go for an Athlon XP, I know the A7V133-C accepts Palomino XPs only, so don't make the mistake of getting a Tbred or Barton. Find out the exact model of your board so you can check the ASUS website for what CPUs are supported, then see what you can come up with. If you have PC100 rather than PC133 & don't wanna invest in RAM, stick with an Athlon with 200FSB
Here's a couple CPUs you might wanna consider...either the Athlon 900 or the Athlon XP 1800+, but NOT the XP 2200+

yeah, now i wish i did spend the 30 to have it installed. but live and learn, and you haveto make mistakes to learn from them. thanks. i'll look into those CPUs.thank you

First, like jam mentioned, let us know exactly what motherbord we're dealing with.
If it helps any, you're not the first to fry a Duron/Athlon this way...it usually happens in a matter of seconds and not many survive.
Skip

I will try to get a pic(s) of it, and then you could see what i'm dealign with. check back tomorrow. thank you

This is what it says on my board, doesnt that say A7VC? If this isnt a good pic, theres on more at the bottom.

sorry my other post didnt letme imbed pictures (at least I think it didn't I dont see them) so here's the link to the pic of the model of my board.

Do you have one of these setups using a "TriOptix form-factor"??

1 of the most important rules of system building is: KNOW YOUR HARDWARE.
& thats definately an ASUS TriOptix Board & since you said it was AMD, from what i know, the max CPU speed you can handle is 1.4ghz, Duron or Thunderbird CPU. Funny thing is, its an ASUS system for newbies, yet they dont have any info on that system on there site! Go Figure.

Thank you, for the links jam. PCWolf. I got this computer from my brother since he didnt want to spend 9 bucks on the cooling fan for the back. (he got it from eBay, a couple years ago) Then because I didn't want to movie wires around, the CPU fan stopped, which made my processor heat up, and restart my computer every hour/2 hours. SO whats when i tried installing this CPU mysel. And here we are. Since this is my first computer I use/modify. I have made some mistakes. (i still plan on building my own when I can afford it, but for now I start with basic stuff.) Thank you again to jam, and PCWolf. What everyone has said has helped me alot. (i'm going to buy a processor at the end of the week, when I get paid) any suggestions on the one I should buy? should i go cheap, or more expensive? Also, since my board can only run 1.4 Ghz.. does anyone know how much the best processor would cost me? Thank you again to everyone.
