I am considering either an opteron 144 or a 3700+ san diego i have seen the opteron considerably lower priced than the 3700+ (opteron roughly £90) i've heard great things about the overclocking success with the opteron
and teamed with a dfi lanparty i think could have a good overclock. Which would you guys suggest considering i am trying to keep costs to a minimum?

I'd pick an Opteron if I wanted to overclock.

Opteron is the better overclocker but that's really about it. Both processors run very similair to each other in preformance.
