Im currently looking into a system i should buy , as i have about 3000 english sterling to spend im getting the best system money can buy , but im stuck when it comes to ram.

I have my eye on some geil pc 5300 650mzh ddr2 2x 512 dual channel cas 4- 4- 4 ram. can some1 explain what all this means????

As im taking an educated guess that higher is better and cross referencing price.

however there is no amd board that supports ddr2 as yet as far as i know.

intel boards seem to , using an athy 64 processor though so will i lose performace being it an intel board or wont the intel bored support the athy chip? much appriciated thx

Im guessing that after seeing your several posts here that you plan on buying parts and building your own PC. But because of the questions you ask, I reccomend you buy a prebuilt system and save yourself some headaches.

Why not do as sabertooth suggested and goto voodoo?

Or try alienware and falcon northwest.

Why not ask have someone you trust build your comp for you and you can learn from it?
I dont recommend a branded comp simply for the VFM issue...
I learnt assembling comps (not much to it is there?) seeing my friend do it.
Watch and learn. Do and learn more. But watching makes you more equipped to do it yourself.

To answer some of your initial questions:

No, An AMD Athlon Processor will not fit an Intel board.

AMD Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron and some Semprons all use a Socket A configuration,

AMD 64-bit, Opteron and higher end semprons usee either socket 939/940 or 754

Intel Pentium 4's use Socket 478

Intel Celeron, Pentium 3 and Xeon all use other socket configurations.

You should get a very very nice computer for £3000 if you build it yourself, or you could get ripped off for an average PC pre-built for you for the same money.

You have to decide whether you want to go down the Intel route (Pentium 4, PCI express etc) or the AMD route (64-bit)

Personally, I'd hang on to the cash or buy a cheap system for now until either AMD does PCI-e, or Intel does 64-bit and perhaps until BTX replaces ATX and DDR2 and SATA2 are available or you could end up with a system with limited future upgradeability potential.
