My computer stopped and showed 'hard drive failure'. Does that mean it doesn't work any more? I have been told to get a 3gig hard drive because that is all it can take, I have also been told that I can put a larger one in and it will only use the amount that it needs. I don't know myself, as I just turn it on and it goes. I have Windows 98 running if that is any help. Where can I buy a cheap or 2nd hand 3gig hard drive? and is that the same as the motherboard? Told you I was a L plater.

I don't think they still sell 3.G HD. Check the IDE cable to see if it's right.

If this is NOT a notebook computer, then you can put in a larger capacity hdd. Get a friend knowledgable in installing and setting up hardware to help you. God help you if you are stuck with a 'rescue cd'!! These are NOT the OS, just a way for the OEM to screw you.

If you have a local computer shop (NOT circuit city type, but the small business type), then you can have them do it. It will cost you some over the hdd cost, but worth it. You will need to take any driver cds/diskettes, etc., plus the comp in for the service. I hope you don't have a gateway, as they are (or were) notorious for locking you out of bios.

Good luck! (I mean it!)

Charles

What kind of PC is it? You should be able to go up to 10 gigs at least. Go to www.pricewatch.com, type 10gig hard drive in search.

Try COMPGEEKS.COM for cheap used/refurbished hard drives.

I just checked their site & depending on what you need (or want), you can get something for less than $50.

Here's a few examples:

Western Digital Caviar 10GB 5400RPM ATA/66 HD w/2MB Buffer for $37.50!

Western Digital Caviar 15GB 7200RPM ATA/66 HDD w/2MB Buffer for $46.00!
