Dear all, I bought a XP2500+ recently and have been wondering this question: how to tell this is a genuine XP2500+?

Of course, from the apperance, it's 2500+. It's boxed and have a AMD logo on the Fan, with all the printing staffs. And it has a barcode printed on it: 5001018004755.

But my MSI KT6V(kt600) doesn't automatically set the FSB as 333(166x2), instead, it's 266(133x2). That is to say, I have to manually set it. Isn't it that I was overclocking if this is not a genuine 2500+?! I downloaded many things to detect, including the AMD cpuinfo.exe. However, the most absurd thing is, they all report the actual frequency the CPU is running. If I set the CPU run at 100x11, that's "authenticAMD AthlonXP 1400+", and 1900+ for 133x11, 2500+ for 166x11. I failed to make it run at 200x11, but I've seen 2600+.

And the temperature is quite high in my opinion, 43 degree in 10 minutes after power on, even if I let the machine spend all the 10 min at Bios setup screen. And over 53 after a little hard work, say Max Payne2 for a while. I did checked AMD document for normal temperature, which says anything under 60-65 degress are normal!

Anyone can help me here? Thanks a lot if this get resolved, it will release a load off my mind. I just can stop wondering about this.

By the way, the report by cpuinfo.exe:
AMD Athlon(tm)
AuthenticAMD
Speed: 1834 MHz
L1 Data Cache: 64KB
L1 Inst Cache: 64KB
L2 Cache: 512 KB
Family.Model.Step: 6.10.0
MMX: YES
EXTENDED MMX: YES
3DNow!(tm): YES
Extended 3DNow!(tem): YES

2500+ for 166x11 is the proper XP 2500+ setting. You are correct to manually adjust FSB setting, that is not overclocking, just helping your mobo recognize which CPU is attached.

The XP 2500+ needs a good fan and heatsink, or it will run around the temperatures you noted. My guess is the CPU will be fine at these temps, but if you want more cooling, get a better heatsink/fan. There is a TR-M3 available for like $10 that keeps my 2500+ computers around 40C.

There may be a BIOS update that allows your MOBO to recognize this CPU.

Your temps are fine and you could break things trying to do better.

what makes you think you know more about amd chips than amd?

"I did checked AMD document for normal temperature, which says anything under 60-65 degress are normal!"

if you're cooler than that, guess what???

Well, I posted this because a friend of mine bought a 1800+, he overclocked it to 2500+ and get a temp of only 30 degrees while idle and 40 after hard work! Maybe his heatsink and fan are better while quieter at the same time than my original AMD heatsink and fan? :(
