Search this forum for 166 or 200 overclock. We had a lengthy discussion on a slew of these just a few months ago.

Post back if you don't understand some of the stuff you find.

ok so all i need to do is change the multiplyer or the fsb speed and it should work but do i need to increase the voltage?

It would help if we knew what motherboard you have...make/model.

You can easily clock your 200 up to 233mhz by simply changing the multiplier to 1.5x...it will interpret it as 3.5x & you'll have a 233. You shouldn't have to change the voltage.

You may be able to get it up to 262.5mhz by setting the multiplier to 1.5x & the FSB to 75mhz (if you have that FSB setting available to you). A voltage incrase may be necessary though...if it's unstable or won't boot with these settings, try the voltage at 2.9v...if it still doesn't work, try 3.0v...I wouldn't go any higher than that.

How about posting your board specs? You may be able to upgrade to a K6-2...possibly a 400 or 450...can't tell ya without those specs though.

I forgot about 225mhz...that works great! 3.0 x 75mhz...no voltage increase is necessary. It's probably the best "safe" overclock for a 200...better performance than 233 w/66mhz FSB.

Sorry...I didn't catch that it was the P200 "classic" & not MMX. Unfortunately, the classic pretty much sucked for overclocking. If you're at 210mhz, I hope you didn't lower the FSB below 66mhz to get there (I think you did though). By doing that, you're actually sacrificing performance just to get a higher CPU speed. FSB is where the performance is...you want it at 66mhz FSB minimum...& 75mhz is preferrable, if possible.

I just looked at the manual for your board...the CPU voltage is autodetect only...there are no manual settings for it...that limits your overclockability. You do have the option of running at 75mhz FSB though, & since your board supports dual voltage CPUs, you could upgrade to a 233MMX & easily clock that up to 262.5mhz (1.5 x 75mhz).

One problem that I see though (& it's been discussed in these forums many times before) is the 64mb cache limit of the older Intel chipset...your board is based on a 430TX. Unless you're running memory intensive programs, you'll killing your system by running 256mb of RAM. Here's a quick explanation: cache acts a temp storage or memory index file for quick reference...it runs at about 10 times the speed of physical RAM (the actual installed RAM)...that's why it's used! But to take advantage of it, you have to stay within the cache limit. The reason is, that cache reads from 1st MB toward the last, but Windows reads from the last MB toward the 1st. So when you exceed the limit, Windows will ONLY be using physical RAM until it falls into the cached area...in your case, Windows will have to use over 192mb of memory before getting into the high speed cache. You should be able to see how that's gonna slow you down.

Now let me throw a twist at you...if you don't have enough physical RAM installed to run your programs, Windows resorts to using "Virtual Memory" (also know as the "Swap File") & that is even SLOWER than physical RAM. So on an older system, the amount of installed RAM has to be tailored to what you're using the system for...if you just use it for the e-mail, the internet, playing solitaire or freecell, word processing, etc...64mb is all you need & your system will perform much better. If your running more intensive applications, it's preferrable to have the system use physical RAM than getting into virtual memory usage.

One more thing...it's possible that you could run a K6-2/450 CPU, but I'm not sure about the CPU voltage...if the autodetect feature detects & sets the voltage to 2.2v, it could be done. If so, the K6-2 interprets the 2.0x multiplier as 6.0x...so if you set the FSB at 75mhz & the multiplier at 2.0x (6.0x), you could clock up to 450mhz (6 x 75). This will only work if the voltage is properly detetced though....

yes thank you for your help but i have a 40gb hdd in this computer and it runs at 7200rpm and windows sees 32 gb of it because the bios wont see the full 40 so i put a jumper on the back of the hdd that limits it at 32gb

so how far do you think i could overclock a pentium 233 mmx up to 266 or 300? but thank you for all your help people.

Did you visit those sites I posted? Did you do anything about the memory issue...my guess is you're killing your system by running 256mb RAM. Try it at 64mb & see if there's any improvement...you can always increase it again, but I think you'll find it runs much better with just 64mb.

What does your 40GB HDD have to do with overclocking? I believe you can get full use of your HDD if you partition it...just setup the primary partition with less than 32GB & the 2nd partiton using the remainder of the drive...or you could use overlay software provided by the HDD manufacturer.

I checked into the BIOS flash info...it doesn't appear to offer anything regarding the hard drive, but it does address the CPU voltage...you should now have the option of setting the voltage to AUTO or set it manually. It also mentions correctly detecting the K6 voltage at 2.2v...so it appears that you could upgrade your CPU to a K6-2/450. If you were to use a P233MMX, you should have no problem running it at 262.5mhz, I don't know if you'd hit 300mhz or not.

By studying the manual, I have come up with a few different multiplier settings that you can experiment with. On the DIP switch (SW), P1, P2, & P3 are used for your multiplier...P4, P5, & P6 are for your FSB settings. It mentions FSB settings of 50/55/60/66/68/75mhz...the 50/55/60mhz settings are useless, don't set the FSB below 66mhz...I didn't see the setting for 68mhz listed anywhere, but it's really not a big enough increase to be concerned with anyway...use either 66mhz or 75mhz.

Multipliers (P1/P2/P3):

1.5x (3.5x) = off/off/off
2.0x = on/off/off
2.5x = on/on/off
3.0x = off/on/off
4.0x = on/off/on
4.5x = on/on/on
5.0x = ***
5.5x = ***
6.0x (K6-2 only) = on/off/off

*** There appears to be a couple of switch combinations unaccounted for...off/off/on & off/on/on...these may be the 5.0x & 5.5x settings (just a guess)

FSB (P4/P5/P6):

66mhz = on/off/on
68mhz = ?
75mhz = off/on/off

If this was my PC, I'd get a K6-2/450, clock it at 6.0 x 75mhz, & run with 64mb of RAM.

Are you sure you have a P200 classic & not an MMX? The MMX runs on dual voltage 2.8v/3.3v. The classic is a single voltage CPU...I think it runs at 3.3v.

If you install a K6-2/450, it would automatically be detected as 2.2v, so you should have no problem with the upgrade if you decide to do it.

As for your RAM, you should somehow try to come up with 64mb...either get 2-32mb SIMMs or a single stick of 64mb EDO or PC66 SDRAM. Most (but not all) PC100/PC133 RAM is backwards compatible, but it's being wasted on your setup...to begin with, 256mb is WAY too much because of the 64mb cache limit, plus it will never run at it's full potential of 133mhz.

Which system is gonna be your "good" system? No offense, but that Compaq is crap...the Freetech is much better. Why not take the 233MMX out of the Compaq & swap it for the 200 clasic, put it in the Freetech board & clock it up to 263.5mhz (3.5 x 75)?

OK...now I'm confused. The Compaq has p233mmx/32mb RAM & WinME...that is your system?

The Freetech has p200 "classic"/256mb RAM & Win2000...that's your dad's system & the one you're trying to upgrade?

In my opinion, both systems are a mess...lol! Chances are, the Compaq can't be overclocked...don't waste your time. You should upgrade your RAM to 64mb though...no higher that that, unless you plan on running memory intensive programs.

The Freetech setup can be upgraded as I described in the other posts...you can go to a max CPU speed of 450mhz...or any CPU between 200 & 450mhz. Once again, you should NOT have more than 64mb RAM installed, unless running memory intensive programs.

I wouldn't run ME or 2000 on EITHER of these machines...that's a big part of your problem. If you wanna get the most performance outta those systems, you should have 64mb RAM & stick with Win98...if you wanna run ME or 2000, get a better system.

Win2000 requirements:
- 133mhz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU
- at least 128mb RAM (256mb recommended)

WinME requirements:
- Pentium 150-MHz processor or better (Pentium II 300-MHz processor or better recommended)
- 32mb RAM or better (64mb recommended)

Win98 requirements:
- 486DX 66mhz or faster processor (Pentium CPU recommended)
- 16mb RAM (24mb recommended)

I'm done with this thread, I've given you my suggestions, that's all I can do...Good luck!

OK, I know I said I'm done...but why are your cards not compatible with Win98? If that's true, why not get cards that are compatible, then "downgrade" to Win98? I don't know if you realize how much you're hurting yourself with these system configurations.

The OS should mirror the system hardware...generally, if you have older hardware, you should be running an older (& less demanding) OS.
