Reply: (edit)Not even worth it for your setup 50mhz diff doesn't improve any noticable improvment let alone on your system. You are much better off buying a nice 3 years laptop if you are on a budget. Reply: (edit)Having sufficient RAM is far more important speedwise than the CPU clock - - with a mere 32Mb, that system will be swapping-to-disk for practically every task With a low-end machine, you might notice the difference with a faster processor, depending, but your system is not a good candidate for OC'ing - - if you want more 'pep', try running less software - I doubt if you really need 'rain' (for instance) I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

Reply: (edit)First of all, if the laptop would overclock at all, I'm sure you'd never reach 200Mhz. The four P150's I'm aware of are all 2.5 x 60Mhz...a really good machine and some luck would likely get you running stable at 2.5x75Mhz or about 188Mhz. Secondly, listen to Cobra and spend about 250 bucks or take the choice from jboy and go shopping for a total of at least 64Mb ram. Problem is that your XPi is supposedly maxed out at 48Mb...I've heard of folks who got 80Mb to work though. My opinion would be to use the Dell as is and save a little money for a good used PIII in the 1Ghz neighborhood. The three old laptops I have that run 98se are a 486DX/75 20Mb IBM, P133 32Mb Itronix, and a 300Mhz 256Mb Itronix. All these machines run the most lightweight browsers and utilities I can find and work just fine if I'm patient...very little happens in the blink of an eye. I like the solution Cobra offered. Skip

Reply: (edit)Oh, for sure - there's really little point in investing much effort or expense on these old units, just recognize & work within their limitations. I've (almost literally) a ton of socket7 boxes, and while I'll play around with the odd one, I sure wouldn't spend money on any of them Upgrading isn't cost effective - save your dineros and get something better, as mentioned I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. Reply: (edit)You mean "Tomb Raider", requiring 8Mb of RAM and capable of running on DOS4? Gosh! Quite the acid test I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

Reply: (edit)Well, my 486DX75 seems to run 98se and Office 97Pro as well as the 300 does...but we all know it doesn't. The 225Mhz and 236Mb differences between the two machines kills the "seems to" effect. Only thing the slower machine has going for it is a very small hdd that doesn't allow me to load many programs. Period... Enjoy your TombRaider2 Skip

Reply: (edit)Heh - well, why didn't you say so? Tomb Raider 2 ... requiring 16Mb & Win95 ! not exactly DooM 3 Try running Firefox with about 20 open tabs and see how you fare - your perceptions notwithstanding. The fact that the drive 'spins down' isn't terribly meaningful, as that's to be expected once the swapping is done and the game loaded into memory While 98 can technically run with as little as 16Mb of system RAM, more really is better. Recently I bumped my one system up to 320Mb - sure, there's plenty available at startup (about 200Mb free) but that gets consumed pretty swiftly once a few apps & file transfers get going (ymmv) I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. Reply: (edit)What jboy said...a very basic install of 98se and IE5 might work ok on an old machine but a full install, IE6, and a few other gluttons will bring an old machine to it's knees. Early versions of winzip and acrobat reader work just fine as do lightweight firewalls and av protection. So far at least...applications are becoming very bloated and older machines just don't have the horsepower to store and run stuff we all loaded without thinking five years ago. That's why most of us play with and use older rigs but still keep a modern machine handy in order to live in the real world. Skip
