I have a sony vio pcv-j 150 desktop. It has a AMD DURON processor. I bought "Joint OPS" its a online war game. But my processor cant handle the speed of the game. How does anyone know how I can overclock the processor to keep up with the game? Thanks

A better video card would probably help more, although I was unable to find what kind of video card you currently have.
If you still want to overclock, do a google search for "socket a" duron overclock. Once again you'll have to know more about your hardware, like if your BIOS/mobo supports changing the multiplier. If so, and you're feeling REALLY SURE about what you're doing, pencil in the L1 bridges and try it. Otherwise you might still be able to tweak the FSB to get an extra 50-100MHz. With the FSB, your PCI bus is the limit. When it gets too fast, your system will crash or even refuse to POST. If you didn't understand any of what I just said, don't try it.

Without any details about your machine, it's hard to give a straight answer, but as Jake said, a new video card will probably make all the difference.
The Duron is a "value" CPU & is slow by design....it runs at 100mhz (200FSB) & only has 64kb L2 cache, compared to 256kb or 512kb of the Athlon/Athlon XP. The multiplier is locked so you can only overclock by raising the FSB. Does the Sony even have any overclocking options?

jam, I googled chrisbdnett's machine and it looks like the Duron is 800MHz. Those old socket A Durons were shipped multiplier locked, but closing the L1 bridges unlocks them. My former roommate ran a 750 at 952MHz, but he had a good HS&F and Asus mobo. My 850 with retail HS&F and an ECS mobo usually ran at a perfectly stable 901 because I could only raise the FSB. Supposedly other bridges control the multiplier, but it never worked for me.
Assuming the mobo doesn't have any multiplier settings, chrisbdnett could get an extra 50-100MHz, but that isn't going to help much. Even if the mobo supports changing the multiplier, with sane cooling we're still probably looking at sub-1GHz.

Actually, depending on what Duron you have..
you could be running at 133MHZ. (266FSB)The Applebred based Durons from 1.2GHZ-1.8GHZ are 133MHZ.
The Thoroughbed cores are among the 100MHZ, if I remember right.

If I remember correctly, the 1st Duron core was called Spitfire (based on Athlon Thunderbird). Then came the Morgan (based on Palomino), & finally the Applebred (based on Thoroughbred).
There was supposed to be a Duron Appaloosa...I'm not sure if these were ever produced or not, or if the core name was changed to Applebred?

Yeah..the core name was changed to Applebred. I have a 1800MHZ and I was very upset to realize that these are superlocked.
I am only able to overclock by increasing the FSB; but the multiplier remains the same, 13.5. I would like to get an older chip, released before week 39 just to see what can be done to it.Raymond Mackie
