I am using a shuttle ab48 motherboard when i try to overclock it becomes very unstable.. i thought it would help if i change the vcore setting. the vcore settings in my bios do not let me adjust them. they are set to 1.50v. am i looking at the wrong place or does my motherboard just not allow it?

A wild guess is that half the motherboards made and 5% of the motherboards in use allow vcore adjustment. Yours does not. There is probably a hardware mod procedure that will allow it, but hardware mods are on the out being so much more trouble than they're worth.
Here is how you adjust the vcore via a hardware mod to a Shuttle AK31. If you hunt around you might find one for the ab48.

Well not being able to increase the vcore might hold you back, but at this point you don't really know what will be the weak link. Your motherboard may be unstable before vcore would have helped, or the memory (if the board does not allow memory speed to be independant of fsb speed) may hold you back.

If your cpu was cooler it would help.
Are you jumping straight from 2.66 to 2.9? The p4 2.66 is not a big overclocker.
vcore is not adjustable through any software I know of other than your bios.
