i have a amd ks-2 500 mhz processor that i have installed and it shows up on my motherboard which is an asus sp97-v as a 233 mh it says my motherboard can have a 233/266/300. i looked up the settings for this particular processor since it is used)no manual) and there are none in my bios and i tried changing the ones on the motherboard accordily for the proper voltage and then my computer would not work properly. what should i do.

Set voltage at 2.2v...FSB at 75mhz...multiplier at 2.0x. That will put your CPU speed at 450mhz. 83mhz FSB will not work with that board.

i used those specs and found the motherboard manual and it showed me how to change the jumpers i did now and i got itup to a 400mhz processor but there was only jumper listings for a 2.1 v not 2.2 v so i used that maybe that is why i didn't get the extra 50mhz out of it you would think there must be a way to get the full 500mhz out of it. how does flashing your bios work i seen on internet that you can flash a new bios in that will except newer hardwares into your bios. do you think that would work has anyone tried

You have a 100mhz FSB CPU & a board that only supports up to 75mhz FSB, not to mention that you can't run the CPU at the proper voltage. Your choices rae 400mhz (2.0 x 66mhz) or 450mhz (2.0 x 75mhz).

If you have an 83mhz FSB setting, it would put the CPU at 500mhz (2.0 x 83mhz), but it won't work because it runs the PCI speed way too high at 41.5mhz.

Another problem is RAM...I'm not 100% sure of the chipset on that board, but I think it's an SiS or ALi relabelled as Super TX, TX II, or TX II Pro? Do not exceed 128mb.

If you wanna get the most outta that CPU, get a motherboard that supports 100mhz FSB & has an AGP slot.

As Jam already mentioned, your CPU is build for 100MHz FSB only and your board can't support that FSB. I think you're lucky if you get it to run at 400 or 450MHz because I have the same CPU in an old system and it's supposed to run at 5x100MHz!

You should find the settings for 83 MHz FSB and try it. They are probably silk screened on the motherboard. You have nothing to lose. I've used many similar motherboards sucessfully with that bus speed.

There is a patched BIOS available here, http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm
It will display the correct CPU speed even at 450 and 500 MHz. It also allows the use of up to 128 gigabyte harddrives. You have to use an older version of Aflash (Asus's proprietary flash utility), newer versions won't work on this old of a motherboard. I have used several of the BIOS files avaiable on his site, all have worked flawlessly.

Jam is correct about the cacheable memory limitation. If you happened to come across a K6-3 or one of the K6 mobile CPUs, the L2 memory cache on the CPU overcomes this limitation. But it would probably be cheaper to find a Super Seven motherboard. Probably best to settle for the 450 to 500 MHz with this system for now.
