first, learn how to do this stuff before you buy. When you take off the old heatsink, you MUST clean off whatever thermal pad or paste that was present. THEN, you need to aplly a new thermal pad or a new coat of paste, which after you may attach the new heatsink. there are clips around the CPU socket, it's a matter of "clipping" onto the clips

That's actually incorrect, Lionel.

Most people learn by first READING and studying up a little, before they go out and buy - especially qwhen it is the very first time that you're doing something. People who donn't read up first, often end up damaging something!

The new heatsink sholud have had a thermal pad on it already. If not, then you'd need some thermal paste. The thermal paste is best applied directly to the top, center of the CPU - AFTER having removed any old residue from the CPU first. This can often be done with the CPU still plugged into the socket - if you can get to it, and see what you're doing.

Obviously, have the machine unplugged.

If you get anything on the face of the chip, you really ought to wipe it off with a papertowel - gently.

Next, look at the fan/heatsink edges around the plastic of the fan itself. If possible, you want the fan blowing toward the chip, and OUT to the RIGHT or rather, the rear of the case. Depending on the layout of your CPU socket, this may not always be possible though.

Do not under any circumstances use too much pressure or a screwdriver to remove the heatsink clips, or to attach the heatsink itself on top of the CPU. You could crack the CPU with too much pressure, and you could scratch the mobo with the screwdriver, thereby rendering it useless. Good luck to you.

Umh, err, correction . . .
I meant to say - blowing out to the LEFT, or rear of the case. Sorry. Also, you just need a decent sized DROP of the paste since it is only supposed to serve as a conductor and NOT as a cushion.
