How much does the L2 cache matter

My current processor current has 512kb l2 cache. The processor that I am considering updrading to has 128kb in the l2 cache. I am considering upgrading to 533mhz from 300mhz. How will a way smaller cache degrade performance?

I guess you have a pentium II and you want to upgrade to celeron. I suggest you upgrade to Pentium II or III (now you can buy only used pentiums II or III) and NOT celeron (I don't like celerons). Well, L2 cache is important (the more the better) for some applications.

It depends on if the 300 had a cache that ran at core speed or 1/2 speed. The Celeron introduced the integrated cache that ran at the speed of the CPU and it had performance equal or better than (at some apps) its sister Pentium CPU. The 533 lacks some of the extensions of some of the newer Celerons and higher speed PIIs. I believe a 533 with 128 integrated cache will be faster than a 300 PII even with 512 cache.

It's one of those evergreen or powerleap processor upgrades. They also have an upgrade kit which can boast my proccesor speed up to 924mhz with a 256kb l2 cache but, a glitch with my type of motherboard(440lx)and that processor prevents Windows 2k or XP from booting up with that.
