Hello, in the past when a new graphics card or CPU came out, you would read reviews from people saying "WOW my system is so fast now!!" However I must be doing something wrong since anytime I upgrade there isnt a huge jaw dropping performance incrase like everyone hypes it up to be. When I upgraded from a Geforce 5700 to a Gefroce 6800 GT I can honestly say that the framerate was the same, the only difference was the 6800 was able to use anti aliasing and keep a fairly better framerate, but it wasnt worth a $400 investment so I took it back.
So now for the reason for this topic, right now I have an AMD XP 3000 and thinking about upgrading to an AMD 64 939 pin. I noticed that they both run at 2.2ghz, so how is the 64 able to dramatically increase in speed? I dont want to buy a new mobo and AMD 64 CPU to find out that the speed increase is barely noticable. Thanks

Well obv the major diff between the two is that the AMD Athlon 64 are 64 bit and the AMD Athlon XP are 32 bit.
Here are some more differances....
The way the Bus speed is handled are diff.
The Sockets are diff.
The Architecture is diff.
The Processor Instruction Set are diff.
The bits on ram are diff.
But here is the diff between the AMD Athlon 64 754 and the AMD Athlon 64 939 just alone.Socket 754 vs. 939:
Socket 754 CPU:Single Channel Memory only
64bit DDR SDRAM at 100, 133, 166, and 200Mhz
Three DIMM's supported
800Mhz Hyper Transport Bus Speed
Runs hotter than socket 939 cpu's
Consumes more power than socket 939's
Socket 939 CPU:
Dual Channel Memory
128bit DDR SDRAM at 100, 133, 166, and 200Mhz
Four DIMM's supported
1000Mhz Hyper Transport Bus Speed
Runs cooler than socket 754 cpu's
Consumes less power than socket 754's

Thanks yes I understand the specs, however how does it perform from your perspectful. When I upgrade the hardware lists all types of huge specs and all of the things it can handle, however when you pop it in the computer you only notice a minor increase. If I am going to spend $500+ I want to say "WOW!" not "Ok what's the difference?"

Wow sorry for the typos and bad grammar, I am half dead and havent had any sleep yet. I meant to say "perspective"

If you Think your 5700 is as good as a 6800GT
then don't upgrade your are playing old games and performance means nothing to you.

I know it is hard to believe, but I am playing Quake III, UT, Half Life 2, well in short just about every PC game out there and for some odd reason the 6800 GT wasnt a HUGE increase in performance. I can only assume it had to be a driver issue or something, but when I purchased the 6800 GT the performance wasnt all that dramatic. I hope that I did something wrong and will purchase the card later on when I get a new mobo and cpu to see if it will work better then.

Well at the moment if ure pc is fine as it is why bother upgrading. 64 bit means it can double the amount of data a CPU can process per clock cycle. Therefore its faster but if u are gona piss about with word n half life two well you wont see that much different since you have a decent machine anyway. How much better is amd then athlon xp? the potential is a lot, but for playing games n s--- like dat well ure machine is good enough

Why dont u give your full system specs
Im only 14, so dont blame meAMD athlon xp 2000+
ECS K7S5A Pro
512 MB DDR ram
Sapphire atlantis 9200se
8 GB quantum fireball
30 GB Maxtor Diamondmax 60 GB Maxtor Diamondmax

Here are my specs if I remember correctly
DFI Ultra Infinity II motherboard
AMD XP 3000 CPU
(1) gig PC32000 Kingston DDR RAM
(1) 80gig SATA Drive and (1) 160GB SATA Drive
SoundBlast Audigy II Platinum
thermaltake watercooling
550watt power supply

As for is it worth the upgrade? As of right now it's not. 32bit will hang around for some time, because longhorn will have a 64 bit version and a 32 bit version OS. It's not until Blackcomb comes out in 2012 is when you will start to see a fase out of 32 bits. Lets face it by the time Blackcomb comes out all of the 64 bit chips out today will be outdated 2 times over.
Your system is fairly new and I wouldn't build another system for a few more years.

well I just did a very similar upgrade. I went from an A7N8x Deluxe with a xp3200 processor to a AV8 deluxe with the 800pro chipset. With the benchmarks I did myself, I seen a 20% gain in processor intensive programs, and a 10%gain with video card intensive programs. I personally really like the up grade and think it was well worth the money and time. My video card is a ATI 9800pro, 1Gig of corsair ram. I can see and feel the diffrence. Just my oppion, have a great day , RSG

i just put together a new computer for my brother , here are the specs :
AMD 64 3000+ (2.0 ghz)
1 gb of Kingston Value Ram
Epox 8kda3j Motherboard
PNY 6600 gt 128 mb AGP
SB Live 5.1CS Source Video Stress Test Score : 118
Here is my set up :
AMD XP-m 2600 oc'ed to (2.4 Ghz)
Abit NF7-S MotherBoard
512 mb of Kingston Hyper-x PC4000 200fsb (3-4-4-8) timings for the ram
ATI 9800 XT 256 mb AGP
SB Live 5.1CS Source Video Stress Test : 122
Now this has been bugging me a lot , i figured the AMD 64 even at 2.0 ghz would kill my 2.4 2600 XP, but it's actually getting slower frame rates in the Stress Test, and that's with the better video card the 6600 gt. The value ram on the AMD 64 set up could be a bottleneck, but even so it wouldn't prevent that much of a higher score on the Source stress test.My final opinion is that my brothers 500$ set up does about the same performance as my 900$ setup, and the 6600 gt does allow 4xAA 8xAF settings whereas i run no AA or AF for counter-strike source. So all in all it was a fair buy. I was just expecting much much more out of the AMD 64 processor.
If any one out there has a AMD 64 in the 2.4 ghz range with an ATI 9800pro or XT. PLEASE let me know your CS:S frame rates
