I really dont understand why everyone loves the new amd xp 2500 with barton core. its supposed to be so great. how are u supposed to use ddr400 ram and not have it bottleneck the system? (people who sign with comp stats often say xp2500 and 512drr400 ram).

So put me in the know please :).

If you have a motherboard that supports 200mhz/400FSB (preferrably a board based on the nForce2 chipset) & PC3200/DDR400 RAM, you simply install the 2500+, set the FSB to 200mhz (default is 166mhz), & your CPU is running as a 3200+...& in many instances, it's possible to overclock it even higher than that.

Wait how come u keep changing the fsb stat from 333 to 166 and then to 200 and saying that it wont bottleneck the ddr400.200 is half of 400 wont that bottleneck horribly?

FSB is 166, AMD's use a douple pump for FSB, hence 333

If you raise the FSB to 200, he double pumps at 400.

This cpu is still one of the best values out there for the oc. As mentioned, simply raise the FSB 200 (vcore will have to increased), install pc3200 DDR (400mhx) to keep the cpu/ram to a 1:1 ratio, and raise the, probably in most cases a better HSF, and you pretty much have a 3200+

pc3200 which is DDR400(runs at 200, the double pump thing again) and it wont bottleneck the system, at default the 2500 runs at 333 (or actually 166 since amd doubles the number)
this means your ram at 200 is running faster than your cpu which is at 166. so even when you raise your cpu to run at 200 your ram can still run at 200. And for the best performance you want your cpu and ram to run at the same speed, the ratio thing again 1:1.

You research and read everything you can find about your motherboard...starting with the user manual.

Along about week 39 of 2003, AMD "locked" all tbred and barton desktop processors against multiplier changes. Simply put, there is no longer an electrical connection in the chip to allow multiplier changes.
It wasn't all that big a deal with the 2500+ which already uses a 11x multi.
The popular mobile processors remain unlocked.

But doesnt the amd xp -m 2500+ start with a significantly slower 266mhz fsb.

Also, why is the 2500 any better than the 2600 2800 3000 and 3200 barton chips? are they locked as well?

Thanks...

I wasn't kidding.

Some M procs run at 266Mhz out of the box. Doesn't mean they won't run a 400Mhz or higher.

The 2500 isn't necessarily better but it's sure cheaper. Why pay 200 bucks more for a 3200+ when, with a decent mobo and memory, you can have the same speed with 15 minutes work?

hardly. Overclocking is not a thing to be rushed, but you can reach those speeds after a few hours if your cautious like me.

How about this instead.

Learning about overclocking is not a thing to be rushed.

But once you know what you are doing, it takes 3-5 minutes.
