I hav ean embarassing question:

How fast is my AMD Athlon 64 4400+ processor? I just bought a new computer, and I thought it was 4.4Ghz, but ummm....I am beginning to think that I misinterpreted the model number lol. what an idiot i am
it shows up in vista(which I am also brand new to) as 2.3Ghz, and AMD's website seems to indicate this as well...
so how fast is it, really?

It's really 2.3GHz however it's *supposed* to be as fast as a single core cpu running at 4.3GHz when running multithreaded apps which there aren't that many of.

I should also note that the Athlon had a good design and it should be faster than most pentium 4s when running single threaded application's as well.

oh man..... meditate is sad to hear that :(

meditate feels deceived and/or stupid :(

meditate still likes new computer though. :)

lol but seriously,
how will this come into play in a gaming sense? most games are not "multithreaded" right? i can barely remember about multithreading from an a+ book I read. I will do some more research on it.
Is this a crap processor? what games can I run on this thing? or is that a question for another sub forum....

well, thanks for replying to my post. I appreciate you clearing that up for me.

thanks for the additional information too. I must have missed it while replying. It does make me feel better to hear more good stuff about it.

As for gaming that cpu should play all games out today probably on high detail and it's not really that bad a cpu however it can't compare the Core 2 Duos from Intel however it is faster than most Pentium D's (dual core pentium 4's)

There are benchmarks here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/82... that does a review of the Athlon X2 cpus however as you can see your exact model is not in the chart however your can still see that those cpus aren't that bad, it even beat a Pentium Extreme edition at 3.73GHz in games.

However the new Intel Core 2 duos will smoke anything on that chart.

As you said, 4400+ is the model number, not the clock speed of the processor. And since you say you it runs at 2.3GHz, it means you have the Brisbane core. The Brisbane is newer & uses less power but unfortunately, it's slightly slower than the Windsor core. It overclocks well though.

Here's a CPU comparison chart. You'll see your CPU is in the middle of the pack. Intel's Core 2 Duo holds all the top spots.

Seems like it should be a PR1866 rating to me.

No because the Athlon X2 series was made to compete with the Pentium D series so the PR rating is fine.

The core 2 duos were made some time after the Athlon X2

AMD is getting rid of the Athlon X2 series soon. It's Successor will be the Phenom X2. The good news is anyone with an AM2 board and a bios update can support the the new Phenom X2 processors. The bad news is AM2 motherboards, unlike AM2+ motherboards won't be able to get support for higher DDR2 ram and HT 3.0.
