how low of a CPU can i get if i want 550mhz?? super socket 7 motherboard that supports 100mhz FSB and 5.5x multiplier; wish to use 550mhz of CPU speed. i am buying an AMD K6/K62/K62+ on eBay to use in it. i will use a good heat-sink fan and heatsink/thermal paste. how slow of a K6/2/2+ can i get that would allow for overclocking to 550mzhz, reason being the slower it is the cheaper it will be. how slow can i get and o/c to 550mhz?? thanx.

I drive an awesome 1972 Trans Am 455 Super Duty that gets about 8-10mpg, but thats a small price to pay for such awesomeness.

will a mobile edition K6-2 work in a desktop pc?? i was thinking mobile edition K6-2 450mhz (because it runs .1 lower voltage then K6-2 regular, allowing greater o/c ability with slight voltage jump to regular) and o/c it to 550mhz, with good HSF and paste. is this a good idea that will work??

Geez dude, those CPUs sell for about $10, just get a 500MHz or 550MHZ CPU & be done with it.

get an AMD k6-2+ you can overclock it to 600mhz.

Don't even bother trying to overclock it with the AMD K6-2 450mhz or a above, those things run very hot and you will not be able to overclock it at all.

You are much better finding a AMD k6-2+ or K6-3+. Don't even bother with the desktop line of k6-2's, because they are bad overclockers.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 6800GT
SATA II 250gig 7200rpm 8mb cache
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

but what about the mobile k6-2?? prob with a k6-2+ or k6-3 is that they still go for a few $$$ BECAUSE they are better CPUs then
K6-2s. but what about the mobile K6-2 450mhz? i already have THAT cpu. i just dont want to fry it by trying to overclock it before getting you guys' opinion on whether or not it can handle it. can it o/c to 550mhz w/ good hsf and thermal paste?

I highly doubt it. K6-2's just were not good overclockers...to get any extra MHz & remain stable, you have to overvolt the crap out of them, then you have temperature issues to deal with. It's not worth the bother & the K6-2+ or K6-3 aren't worth investing in...unless you can find one really cheap.

Use any K6-2 you want, just don't bother to overclock it

A K6-2+ 450 ACZ stepping will do 550 at around 2.2 (default is 2.0) voltage. But you will pay as much or more than you would for an Athlon 800 or so (around $20.00 or so)which would give you much more bang for your buck. The only way it might be worth it to pay what K6-2+ CPUs cost is if you got the rest of the computer for free. I recently got an Epox 8K7A+ with an XP1600+ with the heatsink for $50.00, shipping included. A cheap ATX case, some cheap PC2100, and you will have a computer that will far outperform any Socket 7.

The full speed, on die L2 memory cache of the K6-3 and the K6-2/3+ really helps boost the performance. But they are still pretty slow by modern standards.

It's your money; if getting the extra speed out of this system is worth it to you, by all means, pick up one. But be patient, and get it for as cheaply as you can. Since they were never officially released for use in desktop systems, their prices have always been inflated. But demand seems to be dropping off, so the prices are coming down a bit. It was a little over a year ago I saw someone pay close to $150.00 for a K6-3+ 550 though. A collector maybe? Insane, no matter what.

Mobile (non +) K6-2s are nothing special. Since their default voltage is lower than the plain vanilla K6-2, you can get a little extra out of them. But 100 MHz is usually the max sustainable overclock. By sustainable, I mean able to pass Prime 95, or other stability tests.

If you really need an old PC, get a cheap Celeron or P2-they were miles faster than the K6 series chips from what I can remember.

The K6 line of chips had Pentium Classic-grade FPUs and were (usually) limited to 100mhz cache.

If you get a Celeron 300A and put it on a BX-based mobo, you'll easily be able to overclock it to 450mhz just by pushing the bus up to 100mhz. A Celeron 450 would indeed be faster than a K6-2 550.
