Comment:

Lately I have been thinking of overclocking my 2.0ghz/400mhz Pentium 4 to 2.4ghz/533mhz. Would that be dangerous? The CPU is using the stock heatsink/fan with Arctic Silver 5. I do have one problem though. I don't know how to overclock it. Can one of the knowlageable people here explain to me in detail about overclocking, or give a link to a tutorial of some kind? I already searched google and couldn't find any. My specs are:
2ghz P4
1gb RAM
GeForce FX 5600 256mb
Turtle Beach Catalina
40GB HD
125W PSU

Thanks for your time and help.

125w psu?
that has to be a typo, if not, you will not be able to OC

what motherboard?
what kind and speed of ram?

many factors involved, not just one simple request to have someone tell you how to..you need to research the different overclocking forums...you need to know what exactly do you have in your computer, especially hardware limitations...sounds like you have an OLDER socket 423 pentium 4, using PC133 memory, there in itself is very very limiting

Nope, 125w is no typo. Sorry I forgot to say my mobo and ram speed.
Motherboard: Trigem Glendale
RAM speed: PC2100
And I have a socket 478 P4. Actually, what surprises me is that the video card I have said it required a minimum of 250w PSU, and yet it works just fine. I have never had any hangs or crashes or anything like that.

you won't be able to do any worthwhile oc'ing with that power supply and motherboard

if i am not mistaken, with the right motherboard and something on the lines of a good 400w power supply and an aftermarket cpu cooler, you may be able to work your way from 100 FSB to 133 and that will give you 2.66 ghz and still run your memory in sync with your fsb

i am going to guess, you have an Emachine...if that's the case..you'll need to dump the case, power supply, motherboard and the stock heatsink/fan

case: proprietary, made for the micro power supplies..a new one will not fit

power supply: way under powered

motherboard: junk, can't lock the agp/pci bus, which means it severely limits your OC

stock heatsink/fan: need better cooling when you OC

If it's a mainstream namebrand pc you are pretty much screwd when it comes to overclocking in the first place because their bios options are very limited in what you can do.

Besides that a 125w power supply is the bottom of the line when it comes to power supply watts, not to meant the +12v rail amps are probably like 10a or even 8a or maybe even lower. Do you will need another power supply that is atleast 350 watts and has atleast a 14a amp rating for you to be able to overclock without any problems.

you miles well not even bother trying to overclock this system unless you spend some cash upgrading the power supply, a much better cpu heatsink and fan then the one in it. not to mention if your bios will even let you do any overclocking in the first place.

Well, sorry then. But I have a 400mHZ FSO, not 100... where did that idea spring from? Ah well. I guess I'm out of luck since I don't want to spend any money. This system aint worth spending another red cent on. It's a crappy hp with no AGP slot, so I am stuck with this really slow 5600. I just thought I might have been able to squeeze a few more FPS out of Doom 3. I get about 14fps on medium settings @ 640x480. I am surprised that it autodetected me to medium when I only have a PCI video card...

Yeah you can play Doom 3 on it really smooth without any problems if you take all the extra stuff out of it that are preformance hungry like shadows etc... But by the time you do that Doom 3 will look like Doom 2.
