OS: win vista 32bit
CPU/Ram: intel core 2 duo e4600 2.
Product: Dell / XPS 630I
Comment:

hello all. i was wondering if you could help me with overclocking this core 2 duo.
details:::

dell xps 630i.
cpu intel core 2 duo E4600 2.4ghz.
ram 4gb.
geforce 9800gtx+ single card
hdd 500gb in raid 0
sli motherboard
750watt psu.

ok i am looking to get the processor speed from 2.4ghz to 3ghz. i have disabled C1E and speedstep in the bios. this is the overclock configuration.

overclock configuration

parameters setting current value
x sli-ready memory not detected

current cpu freq,mhz 2400.0
cpu multiplier 12x
ht speed 5x
fsb memory clock mode auto
fsb memory ratio auto
fsb qdr, mhz auto 800
actual fsb qdr, mhz auto
xmem ddr ,mhz auto 800
actual mem ddr, mhz 800
pcie bus slot 1 mhz 100
pcie bus slot 2 mhz 100

how would i go about changing the fsb to get the processor to 2.8 or 3ghz thanks.also i heard that i don't need to mess with the voltage once i dont go above 3ghz ?

"ht speed 5x"...on a Core 2 Duo? That's an AMD setting. Where are you getting this info?

You're not providing enough info about the BIOS. Apparently those are the current settings, but what other settings are available? For instance, you don't want the FSB/memory ratio set to AUTO, so what other choices are there?

I did some googling. Try this:

- Enter your BIOS by pressing F2 on startup.
- Go to Advanced, and then CPU.
- Disable C1E.
- Disable SpeedStep.
- Go to Overclock Configuration.
- Change FSB - Memory Clock Mode to Unlinked.
- Change FSB (QDR), MHz to 1066.
- Change MEM (DDR), MHz to 533.

You *may* have to increase the CPU voltage to stabilize the overclock.

If the above works, the CPU will run at 3.2GHz with the CPU:DRAM ratio at 1:1.

You could also lower the CPU multiplier to 9.5x, increase the FSB to 1333MHz & set the RAM at 667MHz. That will put the CPU clock slightly lower at 3.167GHz but with the faster FSB.

thanks jam.. sorry for the lack of info my first time trying to overclock the cpu. yeh i will try that. dont want to be messing with the voltage unless i know the safety limits of it. will try this though by the way the multiplier wont let me change it. plus i have no fan on the cpu. weather that will make much of a difference at that cpu setting
You *may* have to increase the CPU voltage to stabilize the overclock any idea how much of an increase in voltage ?

ok i tried Change FSB - Memory Clock Mode to Unlinked.
- Change FSB (QDR), MHz to 1066.
- Change MEM (DDR), MHz to 533. saved and restarted and the pc just started up and kept restarting it got to the raid check and it kept restarting over and over so i put it back to defaults. it must be that the voltage needs increase but i dont know how much it needs cheers i can change the multiplier now so will try your settings. no good. i tried a load of different settings like 11x multiplier 1066 ram 533... fsb 1333 multiplier 9x ram 667 no good... strange unless the pcie is changing with it but the pcie always stays on 100

the closest i got to just below 3ghz was using 11x multiplier fsb 1066 mem ddr 533 it loaded up to windows desktop i tought i had it there and it bluescreened the error code was 0x00000124 that was without increasing the voltage im definatly missing something here i've tried stacks of settings.
by the way the setting in the bios in overclock configuration called HT 5X was like that when i got this system brand new. i never went near that but it was always there
what do you make of these settings 9x multiplier fsb 1333 ram 667. but under each of them it says fsb qdr 1332.8 mem ddr 667 actual mem ddr 666.4 doesn't look right.

i changed the multiplier to 15x fsb qdr to 800 and mem ddr mhz to 800 and it worked bang on 3000.0ghz but its strange i checked in system information and it still says 2.4ghz processor. done pcpitstop and that see's the processor as 2.4 i wonder if this is actually clocked. a bit more info would be helpful thanks. plus 15x multiplier seems slower.

You get performance by increasing the FSB, not by increasing the CPU multiplier. Actually, you shouldn't be able to increase it above the default of 12x...are you sure it's actually changing? Since you're keeping the CPU at 800MHz FSB (200MHz freq), there won't be a significant difference anyway. And the reason it's rebooting & throwing out errors with the other settings is because you haven't increased the CPU voltage. Notice in this CPU-Z screenshot that the voltage had to be increased to 1.416v to get the CPU to run stably at 3.285GHz.

Try 9 x 333MHz (1333MHz FSB) with the RAM at 667MHz. You'll get the 3.0GHz you're looking for plus you'll have the performance advantage of the higher FSB. Don't be afraid to up the voltage a little bit. Raise it in steps of 0.025v at a time until the system stabilizes. Notice the voltage range is 0.85v - 1.50v:

Looks like the default is 1.264v so you've got plenty of room to play around. Start at 1.30v & go from there:

"what do you make of these settings 9x multiplier fsb 1333 ram 667. but under each of them it says fsb qdr 1332.8 mem ddr 667 actual mem ddr 666.4 doesn't look right"

Looks like your board underclocks slightly. No big deal...some are slightly under, some slightly over. The above CPU-Z screenshot shows that the board overclocks the bus by 1MHz, I doubt that was done by the user.

BTW, do you have CPU-Z? You should use it to confirm your settings:

ok thanks jam will try all that in a while. will let you know soon. i have cpu-z
just to make absolutly sure do i only change the cpu core voltage ? heres an exact list of what it says in overclock voltage...
cpu default voltage "greyed" out 1.3500v
cpu core "auto" 1.3250v
cpu fsb "auto" 1.20v
memory voltage "auto" 1.85v
chipset voltage "auto" 1.20v

cpu-z says the core voltage is 1.280v

cpu core goes from 1.00v to 1.85v
cpu fsb goes from 1.20v to 1.40v
memory voltage goes from 2.50v to 1.80v
chipset voltage goes from 1.50v to 1.20v

cpu core just gives me incremental steps of 5 like this
1.00
1.05
1.10
1.15
1.20 up to 1.850v

ok jam i got it at last.
i set cpu core voltage to 1.4 it's coming up in cpu-z as 1.344v
i set the fsb to 1066 and the mem ddr to 667 (i scrapped the 667 and put in 533)instead no problems here running great.

cpu-z results are core voltage 1.344v
core speed 2933.5
multiplier 11x
bus speed 266.7mhz
rated fsb 1066.8
i will experiment a bit further but its stable at this settings now. i noticed while using everest the cpu temps using 2.4ghz were core 1 21 celsius and core 2 21 celsius as of now with using 2933.5 core 1 is 23 celsius and core 2 is 23 celsius all at idle. cheers for the help jam. i might go a bit higher when i pick up a cpu fan.

You don't need a CPU fan, your temps are fine. If you set the FSB to 1066, set the RAM to 533. If you set the FSB to 1333, set the RAM to 667.

ok tried setting fsb to 1333 and mem ddr to 667 and the pc started up with a very loud fan monitor did not turn on and it would not boot to the bios. after 3 hard shutdowns the overclock utility puts the bios to its defaults. so had to go back in the bios and put everything back to fsb 1066 mem ddr 533. do you think the cpu fsb needs more juice than 1.20v ? cpu fsb goes from 1.20 to 1.40

right i have it stable now on 3.2ghz 12x multiplier 1066 fsb 533 mem ddr..
cpu-z results

core voltage 1.456v
core speed 3200
multiplier 12x
bus speed 266.7
rated fsb 1066.8

that will do me cheers again jam. take care.
