Comment: I've been reading up on overclocking for a few days now and I've noticed that most places I've checked can get an Athlon 550 MHz, up to an Athlon 750 MHz. I would like to know how I could do this. Could someone please give me a tip. Thanks, -Iron

Reply: (edit)Need to know more about your MOBO. You will also need to be sure you have good thermal control and temp monitoring.

Reply: (edit)MOBO: FIC SD11, bios version NC611. CPU: Athlon 550 MHz Slot A I just bought a brand new cooling fan a couple weeks ago, says it cools up to a 1 GHz CPU. How do I monitor my temp?

Reply: (edit)To monitor temps, you can get Motherboard Monitor free: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ Your HSF is probably adequate but make sure the thermal contact between your CPU and the heatsink is a thermal paste. The tape or “material” supplied by most HSF manufacturers is not as good as generic thermal paste that you can get at Radio Shack. I downloaded your manual and I think that you can change the FSB in your BIOS or CMOS settings. Most adjust it very gradually, checking for stability and temp along the way. Good luck!

Reply: (edit)a simple way to monitor you system temp etc... is to use the Hardware Monitor in BIOS. also your FSB/BIOS OCing options are under Chipset Features.

Reply: (edit)Simple, Norm, but not necessarily helpful unless you want your idle temp. You won’t know what your temp is while actually operating your computer: playing games, running software etc. because when you are at the BIOS screen, you are only running that!

Reply: (edit)If you are good with a sottering iron, you could move a couple of resistors on the processer and your computer will automatically detect the processor to whatever you set it at. AMD saved money in the past by creating one processor (650mhz) and just setting the resistors to the selling speed. Most AMD 550 made after November of 1999 are actually 650mhz, just set to detect at 550mhz. I ran my 500 at 750 after a friend of mine moved a couple resistors. It died after about a year of use though.
