Subject: How accurate is cpu temp. monitor?

Comment:

Greetings everyone,
(specs:xp2200+|win xp|dual fan 450watt psu|1 inlett cooler in front 2 outlett coolers in back|ChieftecTX-10WD.)

I am wondering how accurate the temperture reading is,from the sensors on motherboards.
Because most sensors are beneath the cpu,
they cant read the actual die that sits ontop.
I have a asus A7V266-c and use asus probe v2. When idle temp reads about 42c-44c and ambient temp is 22c-23c, how accurate is this compared to the actual temp of the cpu, if you catch my drift.
Thanks to annyone who can give a comment....

pretty stupid question but ill answer it. it would be hotter under the cpu cuz of heat build up underneath. the actually core it slf is closer to the bottom of the the cpu than the top of die plate, plus ur hsf is touching the die plate itself. so your readings from sensor under the cpu would be pretty dam accurate if not hotter.

Thanks for answering my stupid question,
And i have another one.
Is it normal that the +12volt (that shows on asus probe) fluctuates?

Uh my temperature monitor reads the temp sensor under the cpu and the on die temp of the chip and the Die temp is higher by about 10C. So judging by these readings I would have to say that the Die is hotter and not below the cpu. I'm using the latest version of MotherBoard Monitor.

So Metatron good question and Amsties less arrogance would be nice.

The die temp is more accurate than the probe underneath the chip. I.E. the die temp would be hotter than the motherboard reading.
I think the temp difference is like 10C and above, depends on the motherboard.

Does anyone else thinik Ansties post is accurate? Im curious, because there is some logic to his answer. Any input into this would be great.

What has a greater thermal resistance Air or Metal? Also you have to remember the air underneath may be hot but the die is on top of the ceramic plate. Amd states the the Die temperature is most accurate because the temperature sensor is inside the cpu die itself.
