high cpu usage

my computer has high cpu usage most of the time, at least compared with before. i am using a fresh installation of xp, with 3GB ram and a 2.8 ghz processor, 2 160GB hard drives. please help

no specific process, just several system ones. It has also locked up a few times recently, with the cursor not moving, and only sometimes do keyboard shortcuts work.

Also, when doing highly cpu-intensive things, most of the processing is shifted to one core at almost 100%, while the other core is only about 10% usage

Some programs take advantage of two cores, many don't...what you're experiencing in that respect isn't unusual.
Can't help you if you're unwilling to list which process (or processes) is hogging the CPU. Check Task Manager. How many processes do you have running? It's very possible your system is infected.
