Have built a lot of amd computers and this is the first one I've ever had any heat issues with. The mobo is an msi k7n2g. athlon xp 2200 with a big copper zalmon flower heatsink and a large fan. I originally used the stock heatsink/fan with artic silver but was getting a whopping 70C idle. Painstakingly removed and reapplied compound--5 times. Tried different thermal compound, same high temps. Put a copper Zalmon flower heatsink in there, used artic silver, big fan blowing on it. Now it goes around 62C full load--that is very high for a copper flower heatsink. Two rear exhaust fans, one side fan. Spread heatsink compound thinly as recommended (I've done this before a dozen times). I'm beginning to think the mobo is reporting incorrect temps. MSI PCAlert 4 reports same high temps but I believe it just reads the BIOS. However, PCAlert 3 reports very COOL temps (around 40C idle). What the heck is going on here? Tried motherboard monitor but it can't read anything, reports 0C. Am going to upgrade the BIOS I think. Anyone know of another cpu temp monitor program that does NOT read the temps from the BIOS? I need to figure out if this BIOS is pulling my leg. Thanks all.

Well...why don't you feel the heatsink itself. If its really 62C, it will be hot!! If its just a little warm, then your 40C sounds about right. Sounds like a case of mistaken identity, but always trust your bios temp. Go look for an update, and maybe your board just has a habit of reading higher temps than others.

Your board reads the on-die thermal diode so it reports a 10c-15c higher than another board that reads a probe.

Thanks both for the replies. I wondered if the new msi boards were like the Asus boards in that respect. BTW, I flashed the BIOS and lo and behold the temp plummeted. It has been running Sandra burn-in tests for a couple hours now and it is only 43C. Idling around 35C. And that is with the stock heatsink/fan. With the copper flower it was idling 29C, below ambient. How strange is that? Heatsink feels only a little warm.

Thanks.
