hey guys,
please bear with me as i have quite some questions to ask. i recently built a system with a sempron 2400, gigabyte 7vm400rz mb with via kn400 chipset 333 fsb and 256mb of pc2100 ram.some days ago my mb decided to quit for no reason and i am waiting for my repacement mb.
taking this opportunuty i am thinking of upgrading my ram to 512 mb pc3200 and my mb to one with 400 fsb with via km400a/km600 chipset if it is a gigabyte model.i want to know which of the chipset board offers better oc functions ie agp/pci/ram locks etc.
and also i am lead to believe 2.2 gig is the max stable speed that has been reached with this cpu.why is this the barrier speed can the speeds be taken up with better cooling or is something else at the root of this hurdle.also what is the multixfsb setting at the max speed.

Are you 100% sure it was the motherboard & not something else? What were the symptoms? My wilda$$ guess would be the power supply.

The 2400+ Sempron (1.67GHZ @ 10 x 166) is basically the same as a 2000+ Athlon XP (1.67GHz @ 12.5 x 133). The difference in FSB actually makes it better. You'll definitely need PC3200 to be able to accomplish anything significant, but you should be able to hit 2.0GHz (10 x 200MHz) with the right board. 2.2GHz (10 x 220MHz) is probably wishful thinking, unless you get some good RAM.

If you wanna overclock, don't get a VIA based board...get something based on the nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset & make sure to do some research on the board to make sure it has all the necessary overclocking options.

Newegg has several decent nForce2 based boards for $50 or less in the refurbed section.

Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz
1280MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro
