I was wondering if you could advise I also have the MSI K7T Turbo2 version 5.0 board (6330-250), I am currantly running a Duron 650 and want to turn this machine into a gamer I understand that the highest I can go on this MB is Athlon XP 2600+ 266FSB but they are hard to come by. Can I put a 2600+ Mobile on this board or since I can only go to 2600+ XP should I buy something lower and overclock it since I am maxed out at the 2600+ level anyway and if so what would you recommend?
Thanks

If you wanna turn it into a gamer, you're gonna have to upgrade a lot more than just the CPU. You need to increase your RAM amount to 1GB & you'll need a decent 128MB/128-bit AGP video card. You may need to upgrade your PSU too.

As for the question about the mobile CPU...to be able to run a mobile in a desktop machine, the board MUST support all overclocking options...that means full adjustment of FSB, multiplier, vcore, etc. I had a quick look at the BIOS section in the manual for your board & it looks like you have the necessary options. I'm not sure what FSB settings are available, but consider 150MHz the max because of the lack of a PCI/AGP lock. The multiplier choices are from 7.5x to 15x, so you could theoretcially clock it up to 2.25GHz (15 x 150).

Also, the 2400+ mobile is a much better deal & it should overclock to about 2.5GHz...check the reviews:

jam,

Thanks for the reply. A few questions please.
First, I was planning on getting a single stick to put in the third slot to bump up to 2 @ 128
1 @ 512 or 1 gig if the price is right.
What is PSU stand for? Not sure sorry.

My Upgraded Bios has the following
Bios:
Under Frequency/Voltage Control:
CPU Vcore Select: Default & 1.300V-1.700V
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI CLK:Enabled/Disabled
Spread Spectrum Modulated:Enabled/Disabled
Clock By Slight Adjust: 100-132
CPU Clock Ratio:Default/ X5.0X13.5
This ratio is the multiplier right?
Is this where all of my overclocking is done?

Not sure how the whole system works yet. But my max multiplier is 13.5 my max clock setting is 132 not sure where to adjust the bus. Can you advise a little with the above how they work.
Thanks

PSU = power supply unit

There's a FSB jumper on the board near the end of the RAM slots...I'm not sure of the number...it may be JP17? Look for it & see if there's a jumper cap on it...if there is, remove it...if there's not, put one on. That will put your "base" FSB setting to 133MHz, then when you check the BIOS, the "Clock By Slight Adjust" will now be 133-??? (not sure how high it will go).

When I looked at the manual, it listed the multiplier choices (CPU Clock Ratio) as being from x7.5 to x15. If you say the max is x13.5, that would put your max overclock at 2.025GHz (13.5 x 150MHz). You'll probably have to play with the Vcore (CPU voltage) to stabilize the overclock.

Here's how the above BIOS settings should be set for an XP-M CPU:

Under Frequency/Voltage Control:

CPU Vcore Select: 1.300V-1.700V [1.45v-1.60v]
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI CLK: Enabled
Spread Spectrum Modulated: Disabled
Clock By Slight Adjust: 133-??? [150]
CPU Clock Ratio: X5.0X13.5 [x13.5]

Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB

I also have a k7t turbo2 with a Duron 900. I fried the duron before I could flash the k7's bios to support an xp2400+ thoroughbred I ordered. Can I still install the cpu without having flashed to support it?
