hi, i've never overclocked a processor before but i would like to try it. i went into my BIOS and in the advanced section i noticed that my cpu speed and other things are greyed out and not accessible. i would like to know how i can unlock my cpu(AMD Sempron 3100+ @ 1.8 ghz, socket 754) so i can try to overclock and change the necessary BIOS settings. i don't know if you need the following information:

Phoenix - Award BIOS v6.00PG, Asus K8S-LA (SALMON GL6E)/HP motherboard

Thanks.

As far as I know, Compaq computers contain
OEM motherboards and the Asus sounds like one of those. In other words, the BIOS does not allow for changing options that are neccesary for overclocking.

You can however; overclock by means of software. "Clockgen" is a good program for software overclocking, but keep in mind that either one or both of your AGP/PCI bus speeds cannot be locked - which will dramtically decrease your overclocking ability. I have an Abit NF8 and a Sempron 64 Bit 3100+ overclocked to 2.5 GHZ

You may even consider upgrading to a new motherboard/case (if needed)and possibly a new PSU.

Good luck!

Abit NF7- S2
XP 3000+ @2.3 GHZ
512 MB PC 3200 Ram
Windows XP Pro

Your Socket 754 CPU is "1/2-locked"...that is, you cannot increase the multi above 9x, but the lower multis are available. Your problem is you have a Comcrap. Try the overclocking software program recommended above.

so in other words what they are saying to you is you can overclock it but not nearly as much as you could with a regular motherboard.

I mean there is a way to turn that compaq into a regular motherboard but for that to happen you would have to replace the bios chip itself for the orginal version that comes on retail versions, but that bios chip will cost you almost as much as a new motherboard itself. The bios chip you have in there now was custom designed for your compaq. Don't get me wrong it's still the same board that you would buy at retail it just has a custom designed bios chip instead.

2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7800GT
SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI
