Being new to overclocking and that type of thing I will take a guess and say it is either:

1 Heat
2 Graphics
3 Heat

Laptops are not the best tool for playing games on, most simply cannot hack full gaming, despite the adverts. And those that can are very, very pricey.

Don't get mad: get a desktop ;)

WinXP Pro.

Dane Electronic Pro. Dual 1024MB 400MHz RAM
Tagan 480Watt PSU: 28Amps on +12volt rail.
Asus A8V Deluxe "WiFi" M/Board -

That's not helpful at all, he's not going to buy a desktop after purchasing a laptop like that really is he.
And by the looks of it his laptop should most definately be able to handle gaming.

Any ideas what graphics card you have? It does sound like a heat problem, and if it is, I'd suggest getting a notebook cooler such as this:

Do you have all the latest drivers and bios for your laptop?

Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
AMD Barton 2800
Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe
1gig DDRAM PC3200

I noted the specs of his laptop. Lots of power and speed, however, those two assets produce heat, a lot of heat. It has been known for years that chassis heat dispersal is still something of a “black art” in the laptop industry. Many improvements have been made over the years, but it is also well known that high speed gaming, with cpu’s constantly running at peak over long periods, make the heat dispersal aspect more pronounced, especially for laptops as well as desktops. Your suggestion of a cooling tray should help the situation, but I will still advise anyone who wants a gaming system to go for a desktop. As time goes by and cooling for laptops becomes better the balance will change, up to now heat is still one of the major problems areas with regards to using a laptop for gaming, no-matter what it’s perceived power/speed.

I would be interested to know, when the laptop was purchased was any thought given to the fact that it would be used for gaming, what were the options or advice given. I know that laptops can be used for gaming as I said previously, I also know that “gaming” laptops are usually expensive and special consideration is given by the manufacturers for this use.

Well! I'm here! You don't have your laptop setting in your lap do you? If so, you're blocking the fans ability to get rid of the heat.

The main issue is air flow. The laptops have a very small enviroment with everything cramed in. Try (if you can) step down the speed. That will make it run cooler and see if it will lock up or let you play longer.
