I have a P4S5A P4 Motherboard using Windows 2000 (I use it for video editing). One of the four holddowns on the heat sink retention module has broken.
Two questions:1. Any idea where can I locate a replacement retention module for this motherboard??
2. How does the darn thing mount?? Do I have to completely remove the motherboard from the case and work from the etched (circuit) side or can I remove the old retention module from the top side of the motherboard - what's the trick???
Thanks,
Wayne

The same thing happen to me some time ago on a socket 7 mobo. I had to remove a cpu retention module from a burnt out mobo. by desoldering from the back of board. I used a 15 watt soldering iron because it was the smallest one that would due the job (less wattage means less heat). If you noticed the hsf retention points are located on the non-moveable portion that is soldering directly to your motherboard. Sorry, I guess it is buy a new mobo or start soldering. Excuse me; I've recently saw a mobo. that had four holes through the mobo. around the cpu socket; If your so lucky you can purchase a hsf that bolts on, but you'have to remove your mobo. I do believe in most cases.
