Heat sink installation

I have a xp2400 cpu and am planning to upgrade my computer with an Asus MB and a Athlon 64 cpu. On the xp2400 the cpu has an exposed chip that is very small that the heat sink sits on. I have noticed on the athlon 64 that the chip is not exposed. My question, when applying heatsink compound to the athlon how big of an area is necessary?

I recommend you use the pre-applied thermal pad for the initial installation...of course, that's assuming you're getting a new retail CPU w/HSF. If you have a "used" HSF, follow these instructions:
