HD temps too high!

OS: win xp
CPU/Ram: 512/athlon 2400+

Comment: my HD's temps are way too high. right now it is at 95C. the highest it has been is about 150C and the lowest temp is about 40C with the case off. any advice on how to keep it cooler?

Reply: (edit)do you have fans at the front of your case to blow air onto it??
if not - check if your case can support fans up there - and then go out and buy a couple (mine can support upto 4 fans up there)
if your case doesnt support fans up from - go buy a hard drive cooler if you have extra 5.25" bays to spare

are you sure those readings are in C not F? my HDDs were pretty hot before the 4 fans but i dont think they ever went near 100C

Reply: (edit)First of all, you can't get your HDD temp this high, unless you live in down under this time of the year. And, if it did get this high, what is your board/system temp and CPU temp? If you could browse the internet at 150C HDD temp, sleep well, everything is okay. It's just a bad dream.

Reply: (edit)Sorry for being stupid with the language. But, I belive you have bad temp reading. It just cannot be that much of a difference (110 C difference) with side off and on. What is the HDD brand, speed and capacity?

Reply: (edit)It's obvious his hard drive is reporting false temps. A HD should rarely hit 50C, even with poor case ventilation. With a fan blowing right on the HD, temps should never go above 40C (pending room temperature). Touch the HD, if its just warm you're ok, if its hot improve case airflow/ventilation.

My 80Gig/8Mb Maxtor reported 60°C last summer and the addition of a 120mm fan volted at +5vdc reduced it 10°C.Which hdd...the temp reporting is inaccurate or you're looking at a mix of °F and °C. Skip

Reply: (edit)its an 80 gig 7200 rpm samsung. im not sure of the model but it is hot to the touch. im using speedfan to measure the temps.

I also use smartfan. You might enable or disable SMART in bios to see if that makes a difference. It does not on my rig...but these machines are all different.Skip
