An NVidia card will work fine BUT you still need to make sure the video card you're getting is compatible with your motherboard (getting a PCI Express card for an AGP motherboard will NOT work)

If you could tell me which motherboard you have and your power supply specifications (how many watts and how many amps on the +12v rail) I could give you a better answer.

ATI Radeon 9800 pro

Could you download this and run cpuz.exe

http://www.cpuid.org/download/cpu-z-129.zip

Then go to the mainboard tab and find out the manufacturer and model number. Also could you give more details about the video card. Telling me it's a geforce doesn't really help :).
