Subject: Getting past BIOS?
OS: XP HE
CPU/Ram: P4 1.6GHz\768MB
Manufacturer/Model: Dell DIM4400
Comment:

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 [I know it's old] and is there ANY way to get past the locked BIOS options? I tried and succeeded to get into the BIOS and the only part that I couldn't alter were the CPU and RAM options on the Main tab I believe?

So. Anything I could do to unlock that part?

I like chicken.

Generally, when someone mentions a locked BIOS, they mean it's inaccessible (i.e., password protected). The BIOS on OEM systems (Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway, eMachines, etc) have very limited options to prevent too much user tampering. If you're trying to overclock your Dell, it's not gonna happen thru the BIOS. You'll have to install overclocking software such as ClockGen. However, you won't be able to adjust voltages or prevent the PCI/AGP buses from overclocking along with the CPU.

If your CPU is a 100MHz (400FSB) model, the highest you can safely go is 112MHz...& even that may not be possible without a voltage increase.

Bottomline is, it's probably not worth it.

this is risky but you can try to go see who makes your motherboard and look up the model to downlaod the bios update from there. But again do this at your own risk considering the modfied bios in your dell isn't the exact same as in the 3rd party motherboards. Some people have had succes with this method and others have not.

But the only safe solution is to us clockgen and like jam said that's not going to get you very far. because you can't lock the AGP/PCI FSB.

Ah. Well I downloaded ClockGen but what are the options to overclock? Too.. Little information. Just clocks and that's all.
