Hi,
I just bought a lot of computer parts so I can build a system, but when I put them all together it didn't work. I knew there was something wrong with the video card, because I borrowed another video card from my uncle and my system worked. The other video card was a Nvidia TNT2. I know the Geforce 4 video card isn't physically damaged because I tried it out on my uncle's computer and it worked fine. When I put the Geforce4 in my computer, the computer turns on but nothing is displayed on the monitor. It's like turning the computer on with the monitor off. I already tried to update the bios.
Here's my system specs if it helps:Amd XP 1800 cpu
Abit KR7A motherboard(without RAID)
VisionTek Geforce 4 MX420 video card
350w power supply

same here
had the same problem with my Geforce4 440MX(my old card is a TNT RIVA2)
you need 4x AGP
Try upgrading your AGP port
I did that but only after I returned my Geforce4. I am wondering if I should get it back.
I will recommend getting the Geforce 3 Titanium(Ti) or Geforce 2 Titanium (GeForce3Ti is a bit more costly than the Geforce4 420MX) the Ti tecnology works with the new shading rendering features of directX8.1
the MX series does NOT have this feature!!
and a Geforce2 Ti might work better with your 2xAGP port.

What do you mean by update my AGP port? How do I do that? My motherboard says it supports 2x/4x. Is there something I have to change in the bios?

It is recomended that you go to the homepage of your mother board(manufacturer) and the should have an upgrade for your AGP port
( I did it with my old Acorp board)

All the Geforce 4 MX cards work with agp 2x.I have used them on a Asus pentium 3 motherboard set-up for benchmarks and had no problems at all.And it is only a agp 2x motherboard from back in 1999.

Check your motherboard's manufacturer's website for compatibility issues. Supermicro designed some of their boards to require some sort of registration key in AGP (4x) cards. The little hook on the end of the display card has to have a chip in it for the motherboard to allow the AGP slot to function. None of the new display cards have that chip anymore. For instance: the GeForce 2 had it, and the new GeForce 4 does not. My advice to you: buy an Abit BL-7 motherboard. It does not require the chip anymore.

Maybe an IRQ issue? If that port is sharing an IRQ with something else it could cause problems.

I have the same problem, I'm running a GA zxr 2.2 mobo with a AMD 1800 and a Leadtyek Winfast G-Force 4 mx 420 and I am having tons of trouble. PC booting every other time and when it's running it freezes after 10 min. Any ideas....?

hi there i have an athlon 1400 with a gigabyte ga7zmmh board it has onboard graphics with an agp slot. It is suppose to auto disable on board when i put in a card....it does, no problem. I installed a geforce 4 420mx without much of a problem....the only thing is the monitor doesent turn on first go (cold boot) i found if you hit reset and if nothing try it again up to 4 times and it works non fail everytime with no other problems. I am interested to hear from u if u resolve your problem other than that i have no idea why the damn thing dont go first time. :)
Tony

I have the EXACT problem you have, and i have the tnt2 also and it works just fine but the geforce 4 mx420 f---in does not work!, but its for pci for me. oh and by the way the geforce 4 mx420 "visiontek", visiontek sucks, get the Pny, the pny has a built in cooling system and everything. same exact card but different maker.

hi
i have an asus p4b266 with a 1.6 p4 and i installed a gforce 4xm 420 on windows XP and it keeps on displaying a blue screen with the error: "nv4_disp.dll" or something like that. i thought it was some XP problem so i installed Win ME. i dont get blue screens now but the screen turns off by itself and then turns on as magically as it turned off.HELP!!!!!

Here is a solution you might want to try. Put both VGA's in the machine boot up and make sure your drivers are install then in the display option enable the other card and see if it you gets a picture. Then make the newer card the main one. Reboot and pull out the old card.

I bought a GeForce 4 MX 420 (AGP), and it works, sort of. It replaced my old TNT2.The desktop and most programs run fine, but when I try to run a 3D program, (real 3D, as if first-person shooter type 3D) it freezes. It can run fine for anywere from 2 sec. to 1/2 hour, but then it just freezes. No response from the computer, screen stays the same. Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Alt+F4, etc do not work. I have Updated the drivers, and my motherbord supports 2x/4x. Can anyone help?

Yeah, I just got the visiontek card myself.. MX420, PCI version. It works in a test machine here, but NOT in either of two machines at home, both of which exceed the system requirements listed on the box.
I tried swapping out the card. No different results, but at least the idiots at VisionTek will eat an RMA on it... im sure they are eating a LOT of returns actually.
At this point, my recomendation is.. Dont buy this card unless you've already seen it work in your exact system configuration... which is pretty sad, since its actually my job to sell this crap (and other good stuff) to people...

This GeForce4 MX420 won't work on my SoYo SY-71s2 Motherboard with XP. So, from my experience, if it does not work, take it back to the store where you bought it.
The ATI All-In-Wonder 8500 DV works good on the SoYo SY-71S2 Motherboard.
The ATI All-In-Wonder Pro will not work with a Tyan S1590s Motherboard and Windows 2000.
The Magic Video Video 64 Card will not work with the SoYo SY-71S2 Motherboard, but it does work with XP and a Tyan S1590 Motherboard.
I think these manufactures should buy every video board for testing, or specify which motherboard they test with which video card.

i have the pci version, and on bootup my bios beeps like crazy, i looked online and found that the beeps mean my video card and/or video memory are bad. the wierd thing is, if i keep turning it off and back on, after about 4 times it will boot up normally. this makes me think the card might not be busted, if anyone has experienced this problem i would appreciate a solution..
