Comment:

Would a bios upgrade increase my availible FSB?

I have a DFI P2XLX mobo with the Intel 440LX AGP chipset

According to the manual the multiplier is set by jumpers on the board but the FSB is set by the BIOS.

Any help on this would be great.

well usely Upgrading the Bios help fixing bugs & sometime you'll get more option like Booting from cd-rom if was not in there before could make your Bios detect bigger HD but not the FSB it can't give more then the board can go.

Upgrading the Bios is a good thing (Usely)so if you're sure you got the right one go a head & upgrade your Bios but if you can (with some software)save your own Bios first.

This is from the boards online tech specs:

Motherboard Jumper Settings

External BUS Clock Frequency:

The External BUS Clock frequency is controlled by a software setting in the "Chipset Features Setup" screen in the BIOS Setup Utility. The current BIOS version supports frequency settings of 60/66/68/75/83MHz.

The part "The current BIOS version supports frequency settings of 60/66/68/75/83MHz."
made me wonder if upgrading the bios would increase the the settings for the FSB.

From that it seems to say that a newer BIOS version could support higher sttings, am I reading that wrong?

Yea reading wrong because what i'm saying is even if your EBC is control by the Bios it never gona give you more then the board can support so if you get a upgrade it will maybe change a fiew option in the bios but NOT the external bus clock , i'll stay the same.
Control by the Bios because it's easyer then to play with jumpers but ether way your top is 83 mhz.

Now saying this on new board when you upgrade the Bios it could appen that you get more for increasing the FSB into the Bios EXP:i had a Gigabyte board with 133x2=266 mhz but in Bios i could get to 161x2=322 mhz
once i upgraded the Bios i had the choice to go up to 200x2=400 mhz but all this is not garantie to work.

Anyways because yours is to old Pentium1 I think you won't get this option because back then it's was limited by the board , now today's board are only limited by the chipset onboard & are programmable.

Now i hope that explane it , if you got another question go a head post it & gona try to help more.

Actually its a P2 board.

I am asking this because I bought a Super Slocket 3 and I was wondering what chip I should get, since it a cheap and simple upgrade.

I figure the answer to this is no but I will ask it anyways, can the Super Slocket enable me to go any higher with the BUS? Or am i stuck with a top chip speed of 415mhz (the multiplier is upto 5)

Note: I have seen other boards with the same chipset have a max BUS of 100mhz.

As you can see I'm still a newb when it comes to FSB and CPU's

1)What you can do is Upgrade your Bios & see if it's give you more then 83 mhz.

2)your super slocket3 (adapter i think it is)may have some jumpers on it to ajust the EBC & cpu clock but even if it shows 100 mhz i don't think that you'll get more then your 83mhz in bios but then again only one way to be sure is to try it.

Tip:if you wont to make your computer faster (overclocking) you can lower your cpu clock then raise you EBC to get at 83 mhz (If you can not reach it on the actual clock)
Always better with a higher EBC then a cpu clock because it's makes everything on your board go faster memory ,AGP , pci ,etc...

BTW:If you check what is gona cost you upgrading your P2 it would probely be cheeper or cost around the same to go & buy a AMD board with a Duron or Athlon cpu & 128mb DDR min. if you got a ATX Mid-tower case if not you can buy one with a 300 watt PSU for very cheep price $50. Can.
then you'll be fast a lot faster then what you got right now.

Thanks for the help.

I do plan on upgrading to an Atholon very soon I just happen to come across the super socket for very cheap($5) and I figured it is better than nothing until I get more money to really upgrade.

BTW: whats a good place to get equipment cheap?
