Probably, if your [no offense] Stupid enough to apply the CPU and turn on teh system without a heatsink/fan cooler or thermal paste. You just f'd urself. Put on the heatsink and stuff and try again. If it doesn't boot you can toss it in the trash sorry bud.

Put on heatsink and try again ya? Because some motherboard like Asus ;D has the built in circuit protection for CPU overheat. It will shut down your computer before the CPU burns, it sounds like 3 seconds is not enought to burn it. AMD will take 7 seconds to burn or reach over 90 degrees =D. 3 seconds it may be at about 30-50 degrees.

Well it depends if it was enabled in BIOS as default. Unfortunately my motherbard [Gigabyte GA-7VA] has the same option but it was default-disabled.

just put a heatsink on, rememeber to put on some thermal compund or thermal pad, then re-test, if it works, it works, if it doesn't, it's gone

Have you tried a different power supply? I know this sounds way off but those things are wierd. i had a similar problem. I was letting my brother help me build his system and he put the ram in backwards somehow. No idea how he got it in backwards but the burn marks on the stick matched the burnt area on the bank and it WAS backwards. Anyway, after buying new ram and a new board, It still wouldn't post. But the PS would come on (fan) and the HD would spin. No picture, blank screen. acted just like it didnt have any ram installed. After a little searching on the net I decided to change power supplies. Booted right up and never had any problems since. Weird. Like something that controls memory was burnt in the PS.
