Well, I have a quite weird question which I neither tried it nor dare enough to do itˇK So I need someone to guide me and tell me the truth as well as the affection. ThanksˇK
Is it possible to force AMD XP 1800+ to run below 1533 MHz? For example, I set the CPU ratio at 10x and133MHz of FSB, then as theory the total of speed would be 1330 MHz. Will the CPU able to operate that speed or computer unable to boot up anymore?

You can lower the FSB speed, but the CPU multiplier is locked. Running the CPU at a lower speed is fine, though it is a waste of money really. It will run cooler though.

In fact if your computer hangs during the POST it will restart in "safe mode" running at the lowest possible speed for your CPU (a 66MHz bus speed I believe is the lowest that modern motherboards will go).

Any particular reason you want to do this? Just curious.

I didn't make the initial post - but based on your response Jim, I have a question.

I don't know a lot about the inner workings on a CPU, but are you saying that I can't set my 1800XP to perform at a clock speed that's 12X, even though the mainboard has hardware jumpers and dip switches that will permit me to set up the 12X speed?
(12.5 is my max multiplier)

And if that's the case, what about FSB? I have a board that runs at a FSB of 200, but I can get it to run at 260 by making adjustments in the bios accordingly. When I looked up the info. on what I want to do, directly on the AMD website, it stated that it was pssible to run the AMD XP processor on a lower FSB. To me, that's all pretty confusing in the long run.

What is, and what is not "locked" on an XP1800 CPU, and can anything that's locked be UNlocked WITHOUT scraping or soldering anything on the chip? Do you know? Thanks.

BTW leembo, I was gonna mention this to you in another post. If your XP1800+ multiplier is locked, it doesn't matter what you set your dip switches at...the multiplier will be seen as 11.5x.

leembo: one last thing...if you scroll down to my earlier post "higher memory clock vs higher FSB?", there's some info there for ya...

Got it, downloaded it, thanx!

Unless I decide to unlock the CPU (can't get the Tom's Hardware page for some reason), I might still be satisfied with 11.5 X 130, this being just a tad slower than what's called for.

I downloaded an unlocking video too - but when I tried to use it in media player, it just played really cool music, but no pictures. Ah, well.

leembo...maybe if you go to Toms Hardware & search for that page, it will work for ya...it has all the info (including pics) you need to know about unlocking your XP. I also read somewhere that there's an unlocking kit available for about $10 or so.
