What is the difference between flashing a bios and update a bios?

I have tried flashing my bios but when i enter the bios after flashing, the bios seems to be the same, no extra feature.

you may not notice any difference other than the bios version number, the new bios may just add support for a faster cpu or bigger hardisks or support for lower rpm fans or somthing
