I have the same problem with you as well. I have AMD Duron 1.3Ghz with Asus A7V rev 1.05 and I can't seem to unlock the multiplier marking the 5 L1 birdge with my No.2 pencil. I really want to unlock my Duron and get it upto 1.4Ghz or something.

Have you set the VCore to 1,75V ???
If not that may be the problem!

TMP-Man: you have the A7V133, he has an A7V.

Bach: the earlier Duron with the Spitfire core had 4 L1 bridges, but the newer Morgan core has 5. If you're sure you have the board configured properly, my guess would be you have a bad CPU.

I worked on a friends v1.01 board once. As I recall the fsb switches had to be set at 100Mhz in order to set the multi. The multi also maxxed out at 12.5.

I can't get on the ASUS site to find the v1.02 manual or anything else at this time.

Gotta be a fix for this somewhere. I'll keep looking as I play phone tag with the regulators and bureaucrats today.

Yes, I have a A7V "classic" (rev 1.02)

jam: ok...

But I'm not even sure of how a correct configuration would look like. What should I normally have to change? Can I run in jumperfree mode? (that's what I'm doing right now with my Duron 650)

My guess is that I should at least change from Jumperfree mode and set vcore to 1.75V, I read somewhere that a Duron 1.3 GHz need that. But that didn't work last time. But someone told me that maybe my psu (350W) isn't enough since I have a lot of other equipment connected to the motherboard like 3 harddrives, 2 cd-player and 3 fans... + geforce2 mx graphic card, a NIC and a soundcard. Gonna try to disconnect some of these things...

Still wonder if the 5 L1-bridges are a problem... does the CPU have to be unlocked?

And do I normally have to change the FSB??
(I don't know what it is now since I run in jumperfree mode)

Bach,

The 1300 is designed to run at 13x100Mhz@1.75v default.

The dip switches on the v1.01 I spoke of above set the fsb bus at 100Mhz and slightly above and set the multiplier. That info may not apply to your v1.02 board. We need to find out exactly how to set this up.

Found an old review here

http://www.sysopt.com/reviews/asus-a7v/index3.html

and think this is the manual here

http://www.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/kt133a/a7v133/a7v133-105.pdf

v1.01 and 1.02 are entirely different animals but still looks like the v1.02 only supports a max multi of 12.5.

Does anyone think the Duron is looking for the 13 multi and confusing the motherboard?

I think a phone call to a warm body at ASUS may be in order.

Just checked the Asus site...sorry to tell you that your board doesn't support the Duron with Morgan core...you'd need revision 1.05. (with the dot)

One other thing you might want to try.

Get the manual out and set fsb at 133 and multi at 6.5. It's a long shot but it may see the 1300 there.

The manual I downloaded says 133 too. v1.01 is 100Mhz only but the 1.02 seems to be identified as the A7V133. Did I take the wrong road somewhere?

I know what ASUS says... but it's supposed to work anyway, even with rev. 1.02

Lot's of people at the forum I posted my question in has got it to work! With exactly the same hardware as I have. I want to believe them! ;)

I've updated the picture of my CPU with more info that I found. Look at: http://aviana.csbnet.se/~bach/cpu

Skip I believe your right about 1.75V and as it's comes to FSB I should probably look at the updated downloadable Manual at ASUS site of my motherboard.

Some ppl say that if I put it at 5 multi, the bios somehow make it 13.5 ... but I'm not sure of what they actually mean...

Jam,

I had my head up my butt when I typed 133...I meant 100 but my fingers weren't connected to by brain.

Bach,

Seen a few ASUS boards that give desired results with odd multipliers. I don't try to figure it out. Likely because I couldn't anyway.

I'd still like to know if the A7N v1.02 is the A7N133 or something else.

According to a table a the bottom of this page it should work: http://www.a7vtroubleshooting.com/info/cpu/index.htm

Hmm, I meant 300W not 350W (my psu)

Well as long as I sit by this computer I can't try all the sugested solutions since this is the computer I want to change CPU in. So I'll try this now and I'll report what happened.

See you on the other side! ;-)

Just tried to start without any HD:s or CD:s connected and this config:

Not jumperfree
Vcore: 1.75
Multiplier: 12.5
FSB: 105
(12.5 x 105 = 1312.5)

Nothing happens... what else should I try??

Well, it's seems it can only be one of two things...either the CPU is bad or, as it says on the Asus website...your board does NOT support the Morgan core.

I had the same problem with my A7V133-C...I bought an 1800+ T-bred for it...the Asus site said that it only supported the Palomino core, but I found several sites (including the A7V troubleshooting site) saying otherwise. I struggled with it for over a week...I finally surrendered & bought a new AOpen board that supports the T-bred & I got a used Athlon 1.333 to run on the Asus board.

*sigh*

Damn... if I could just "lay my hands" on one of the guys that claims that they got it to work... starting to think it's just fantasies... :-(

Hm, is there any way to find out if the CPU is bad except by testing it in another motherboard where it's supposed to work?

How does a computer with a broken CPU "act" when you try to turn it on?

Just like mine? No beep, no signal to the monitor, nothing but the harddrives and fans starting to spin???

Bach

If I try to change the multiplier on my MSI board the Duron1300 just ignores it. That could be the factor that kills this deal.
I'd bet that if you dropped a 1200 in your board that it would work.

I've searched some other forums for A7V and Duron1300 and found questions but no answers.

What does that actually mean??

btw. thanx alot so far Skip and Jam, I really appreciate it!

No, mine actually fired up but was very unstable...I knew something was wrong right from the start. I had it in jumperfree mode & it was recognized as an XP2000+. Then, when I tried to load WinXP on a fresh drive, it kept locking up. So I pulled all the cards & played around with the BIOS settings...I finally got it to load XP by lowering the FSB to 100 & going conservative on the memory timing. Then once I got it loaded & booted up again, I checked system properties & found that it was being recognized as a Duron instead of an XP. CPU-Z also recognized it as a Duron. Anyhow, I reset the FSB to 133 & started getting lockups, blue screens, random reboots...you name it. I posted on here & was told by several people that my board didn't support the T-bred, but I was stubborn...after all, I had several websites telling me it should work...lol! It was a real nightmare! Like I said, I finally surrendered to the truth & I'm now very happy with both systems. I'm running both with a mild overclock...140 FSB...both are stable & running strong....

Just have to add one more thing, in BIOS (running my Duron 650) I can manually set FSB from 95 to 200... I thought 100 FSB was the maximum ??

Yea, your CPU is locked...that's obvious from your pics. What it means is no matter what you set the multiplier at, that setting will be ignored & it will go with the default 13.0x multiplier setting.

No, I don't think a 1.2 Duron will work either...it's still the Morgan core. It looks like the best you can do is a 950 Duron (Spitfire core) & then overclock it. Actually, you'd be better off getting a 200 FSB Athlon (Thunderbird core). This site has the 1.2 for under $40...the 1.3 takes a bit of a jump though...don't know if it's worth it...

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=A1200AMS3B

Hold tight before ya jump the gun though, maybe someone will come up with another suggestion. Do you have any way of testing your 1300 to make sure it's OK?

Here's some more info...from the Asus Taiwan site:

1. A7V doesn't support Athlon XP. Please refer to the following URL:
http://www.asus.com.tw/inside/Techref/athlonxp.htm

2. A7V can support up to Athlon 1.4G (200MHz FSB) with latest BIOS. Please note it doesn't support 266MHz FSB Athlon. The BIOS can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/socka/kt133/a7v/a7v1011.zip

3. A7V can support up to Duron 1.3G since PCB version 1.05. (with trailing dot!) with BIOS version 1008 or later. Please check the PCB version of your A7V. The PCB version is often printed beside the model name on the motherboard. You can refer to the URL below for detailed:
http://www.asus.com.tw/inside/Techref/duron.htm

rev. 1.02
A7V Beta BIOS: 1012.01a

Jam, ok... damn.. well, I'll wait a little before I "get rid" of this CPU, maybe it is broken. I'll see if I can test it somehow.

Burrrrrrrp! I still find a7v at 100Mhz w/ no multi dipswitch, then a 1.01 at 100Mhz w/ a multi dipswitch, then a 1.02 that kinda comes to a dead end...it's identified on one site as the a7v133.

Burrrrrrrp!

I'll get all these sites in notepad and post back. Then you guys may be able to help with the mobo id. I don't see how we can have a classic/vanilla/generic/fitall A7V that configure that differently.

Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp!
